Bulls

How many bulls should you have per head of cattle?

You will need one bull per cow in heat.

No bulls if they are not in heat. ;-)

I feel devilish today.

No, really, lots of people use 1 bull per 10 to 25 cows, and up?

If they calve year round the number could be lower due to less breeding activity on a given day.

Some commercial guys I know have twice the bull power normally needed and rotate bulls every two weeks for a close calving season.

It would also depend on the age of the bull. You could quickly ruin a good bull by placing him with too many cows to start with, possibly stunting his growth potential.

We have 1 bull with 45 head of cows, start calving the middle of March and are done by the middle of May except for a straggler or two that breeds back late. This past spring the late ones were the two heifers who calved as yearlings.

I had 2 with 85 cows then they mature bull hurt the younger so He bred them all...Around here we run 30 with a yearling and 50 to 60 with mature bulls..

Also depends on how much ground that bull has to cover to find the cows. Here we run 3 bulls with 120 cows, not enough bulls in my opinion, but tryin to remedy that.

We run about 1 bull for every 20 cows should be down to about 1in 15 due to the country we cover but haven't stocked up yet. Hate them black bulls would rather have nice Herefords

why use bulls when u could AI and get the best of the best we do about 50 cows AI midn u we calve through otu the whole year

com.herd one bull per 35 cows. Think i am a little light but I want to hold the bull long term, on reg herd one bull to 10 cows plus AI them.

I feel you can over work a bull, my goal is to get 10 years of top use on a bull. but to much cows on them and dont rest them, you can blow a bull out.
