Ask my vet what % sperm count should I exspect from a potential replacement Bull. Vet said at least 85 %

Told the vet I want to have the bull sperm count, motility, morphology, testicles circumference everything checked out.

The vet said there wasn't any vet around here that was going to do a morphology test because that requires dieing the test slide. Anything outside of a sperm count is not important according to him. That's the impression I get.

This vet is the only vet i have ever used to do a BSE and the only thing I have ever seen him do is take a semen sample and look at the sperm. And when i say looking at the sperm that is only to see what percent is alive.

That don't included checking the sperm for defects, bent tails, detached heads, motility which all is as bad if not worse than low sperm count.

I wasn't aware of what all is involved in doing a BSE until I started researching it myself.

The last couple BSE I had this vet do he didn't palpate the bull to check its prostate gland or clean feces out of the rectum so that the electrojac could make contact. This last time he didn't even have enough lube to cover the electrojac before inserting it.

The bull never extended its penis so that it could be checked for a torn prepuce or other possible injuries. In order to get the bull to extend sometimes the electrojac has to be repositioned to make contact.

As far as just looking over the bull's gate, eye's, body condition. My vet doesn't pay any attention what so ever to thoes things.

Is it just my vet that does a BSE like this or does anyone else's vet do it this way too ?

The vet that we usually have check ours does it pretty thorough, he will do the BSE paperwork if needed and write down the percent of live, mobility, and defects, as well as scrotal circumference and the other visual appraisals. We had a bull checked once by another vet, and he did not extend out of the sheath. That vet said that he was probably fine and that a good portion of what they checked did not extend.

I would find a new vet, he sounds lazy. What does he charge for that?
We have three different vets we use from two different clinics. They all palpate and check morphology. And they fill out all the paperwork with the scores for each area, whether they are our herd bulls or sale bulls.

He doesn't fill out no paper work. Charged $ 35

He works as a sale barn vet once a week and during any special sales, been doing that for close to 30 years.

I think he has decided the small animals he works on are easier than cattle and makes alot. If not more doing that.

He has 6 girls that work in his clinic. I don't know what they do ? Never see them do very much at all.

It sounds like you're getting what you pay for. $35 is pretty cheap

Yes it is but I wasn't trying to save money. I am more than willing to pay the going price for work that someone has done for me.

In this case I don't think what was done was worth $ 35 if even that was done. I didn't actually see that done.

I'm inclined to agree. If he's not interested in doing the work the way you want it done, look elsewhere.

In my area he is one of 2 vets that work on big animals within 20 miles and that will make scedhuled farm calls. Out side of thoes 2 the closest is 50 miles.

The other vet has a very bad reputation among most farmer's that I know. I pass by his clinic 5 days a week and most of the time I don't see any customer's there. So i don't think many people use him.

As bad as i don't like some of the things this vet that I use does. He is better than no vet at all in some cases.

I am going to try and locate a better vet to do some procedures like a BSE on a new bull or any bull as far as that goes.

Unless he is an accredited morphologist, Vets would send the semen away in special small vials that fix the semen so it can be worked on by the morphologist.

$120.00 for 3 bulls and a complete exam, including assistance from one of the vet techs and I did give them their vaccinations while they were in the chute. Money and one hour of our time well spent. Sperm is starting to coil on my oldest bull but he's good to go for this year.
I believe my shirt expressed Woody's thoughts exactly:

Ummm, well, I've had Bob the Viagra Guy, Dick, Peter, Rod, MoLester, Johnson, Woody, Willy - just to name a few. The implication is a little salty, but I can still refer to them in polite company;). They have one job; might as well go all out.

Hopefully our bull Rusty doesn't have issues getting started when we turn him out with the ladies, based on his name.

Our vet does the morphology test with the dye etc. Will check seminal vesicles if there's a lower than expected count. Checks feet legs eyes pulls sheath back and does a full visual examination.

$40 per bull, cheap. Our vet charges $62.50 per bull and I've heard of vets charging over $100 per bull.
I'm incredibly lucky. Two large animal vets in the practice that both grew up here, have cattle of their own, and the clinic is all of 20 minutes from the ranch. Trip charge out here is only $30 & they're always on call. But they do make up for it with antibiotics, vaccinations, etc.

Looks like you need a new vet. Mine checks everything from the rooter to the tooter before he checks the business end. He says if anything is wrong before the semen sample what is the point. He wont certify a BSE unless the bull is 100% passes.

Same here.
50 bucks

Rooter to tooter! 🤣🤣🤣

Last bull tested bad, had one testicle messed up. Forget what he called it. He would not pull a semen sample. Said that failed him.
Damn bull bred all but 3 anyway!
