What is the youngest I can put an young Angus bull out with the girls. They are mostly 5 year olds. He is now about 14 months.

My Granpap always thought putting them on cows before they were two would stunt their growth.
I'd be more inclined to take in his condition.
Although, I don't beleive he should go out at 14 mos.

We raise our own bulls. So we use yearling bulls. They are 12 to 15 mo. old. They will worK on 25 to 50 head of cows. We have used 4 young bulls of 60 head and got 95% bred and calved. Hope this helps.

I have used them younger than that, and have stunned them also, but keep them on good feed, and don't overwork them. My thoughts are it is better to have some calves from the young bull, than not to use him, then be shy of a calf crop. I have had cows bred by 11 month old bull. Not saying it is the thing to do, just being honest.

he can breed 5 cows easy.but if your worried about his growth during that time you can feed him daily.id do that to keep him growing an easy to handle.Horticattleman":cvkevynj said:
I would consider testing a young bull on 5 - 10 cows good practice. I agree with making sure he has enough to eat, but good grazing should suffice. You are not going to stunt a bull by turning him out with 5 cows, but you will stunt him if he hasn't got enough to eat whether he is with cows or not.
I've recently used a 10 month old bull calf as a cleanup bull on 12 heifers. I don't think he had any work to do, but he still did all the smelling and investigating and he is just fine. There is no difference between him and his mates the same age as far as size or condition goes. He was on good pasture with the heifers with only a mineral lick.

Get a BSE and if he passes turn him out. If he fails ship him and buy a good bull that has already passed a BSE.
