Looking for a replacement bull but the market sure has not affested what people ask for bulls.

Even though the calf market is down most of the Angus breeders around here are up on their price. Not a lot of supply around as most of the big breeders are saving bulls for spring sales. Maybe I am too tight but what do you feel is a good price on a decent bull?
 
Given the cost of: good genetics, a solid health program, marketing, what the feed costs have been this last year too develop bulls, etc $3000 to $3500 would be really fair. Now I am sure that if you really look you can find a really good bull for less than that though.
 
a fair price for a bull is $2000 to $2500.all though ive never gave that for a bull.the most ive ever gave for a bull is $1500.
 
If you can't find an angus bull within your budget then I would be looking for a different breed of bull that has the qualities you are looking for and within your budget. Quality doesn't have to come in black.
 
Dont think you mentioned what the quoted prices were. But these days $2500 for a "decent" bull isnt out of line. The bulls in the good sales that make me salivate are running $5000 and up. But dont get the commercial market confused with the registered seed stock market. There are different forces driving that market. Then again dont forget that THE BULL IS 50% of your herd.

There has been a lot of decent papered bulls going through the sale barn for packers over the past 6 months. Packer prices are good but these animals had papers. Somebody had a lot of nickels invested that got rolled over.
 
Boogie...saw two young registered angus bulls (19 months old) sell yesterday at sale barn. If I remember correctly they only brought about $925. Auctioneer didn't give any info about them other than they were papered.
 
Whatcha lookin' for in a bull, Tom? I don't have anything for sale, but I know a few folks all across the state. I could keep my ear to the ground. This cost-share money from the tobacco buyout has blown the cost of bulls out of proportion. Come look at my hereford bull, you might change your mind about angus!

Most everyone has been building their commercial herds back up after the heavy drought culling. Makes you feel sorry for the angus folks. Once everyone gets their numbers back things might change a bit.
 
I found the bull market to be quite soft this year. I sold a super nice 2 yo GAR USPB son and a nice 15 mo lead on son this summer for $1700 each. Still have a B/R New Frontier son I used for cleanup I'd expect the same money for. I'd take $1000 on a weanling bull right now and hope to get my prices back up to $2000 on 15 mo bulls by next spring/summer but it's hard to say now what things are going to do. Part of the reason people don't come down much is you can still get $1400 on a mature bull in our area at the sale barn right now.
