So this past summer i said i would right about our experience in getting insurance on the bulls.
We took out policies on the bulls on top of the normal livestock insurance.

Prelim:
Breeding soundness evaluation on our bulls within 48 hours of taking out insurance..vet done and signed off on

Policy
We took out three policies on each of the 4 bulls...number 5 did not get a policy
3 were registered
1 home grown

1. loss of use...some kind of sickness preventing him from breeding...took out 1000.00 for rent of a bull
2. loss of function...can't do the job for some reason...again 1000.00 to rent a bull
3. death...he had to be put down, or died from any number of circumstances....bloat, impalment, attack, sickness,etc...we took out cost of purchase on these. Found out today we could have taken out what they were worth,...but how do you judge that in todays market? What we thing might not be what the adjudicator thinks

cost for 4 bulls 800.00

Results

bull 1 went down, vet looked at sent a letter to the insurance that he would be out of commision till such and such a date. Out for 6 weeks
Got 1000 to rent a bull

bull 2 got foot rot. caught in early stages, vet gone on holidays, was down for few days, treated and kept home for a week untill better...no insurance cause the bull okay.
Dd not bother to claim as no vet at the time and he was only out few days...hope the soldiers were ok and not damaged from a fever...

bull 1 got sick this past two weeks...same problem. Vet said euthanize, sent a letter to the insurance after post...post free cause there for BSE test and she was just curious as to what the heck...
insurance claim in and he adjuster called. Got the info on the bull, sent the paper work to an adjudicator, one who figures what he was worth.
He was worth 2700.00
But because we just took out what we paid for him got it all. 1800.00
plus cancelled the policy on him plus Mr Poopoo head who we sent to slaughter, got back approx 160.00.
So actual cost on isurance 800-160= 640
Plus vet breeding soundness 50.00 each, which we would do insurance or not= 200.00
Vet on bull 1...75.00 including all drugs
total payout 2800.00
net 1885.00

Will we do it again...more than likely. Won't always have bull problems but if we do...we are covered. They cost a frightful enough price...

jury is still out on the crop insurance for our hay...will find out soon though...hope
