Bull--Do I keep him or let him go

I have a bull that is growing quite rapidly 3-years old now. I have a newborn bull and he looks great. Do I let the 3 year old go and keep the newborn or do I let the newborn go and keep the 3 year old.
I don't want to have any trouble with him. I heard they get honary as they get older.
He is a polled herford.

If you are going to AI her why not just AI the whole lot?

Chances are he isnt herd bull materal. But in todays world I doubt the sire was either. So what are you going to do?

plus he's a hereford not likely to get any meaner than he is now. don't confuse em with a holstiens bull temperment whole nuther ball game

I think it's a bit early to be judging a new born bull. Give them both some time.

ive had 3 or 4 mean holstein bulls when we was milking.an they would tear into you if you gave emm half a chance.never got in close quarters with them either.had a bull that would go after you if you went beyond 50ft from the back of the dairy.

I've heard if you have warm hands, they're less likely to put up a fight.

Every year I have a couple of calves that I have high hopes for. Sometimes they perform like I would expect, sometimes they fall apart. Don't hang the future of your herd on one calf.

I figure a bull is a bull, no-matter what the size they can all kill you. Give them all of the respect you can and ship the ornery ones.

If he isn't giving you any trouble now and his calves are good keep him.

My brain must be moving slow due to ice and cold weather - why is a three year old rapidly growing bull a problem? Is his behavior the real issue? Why get rid of good young bull that is capable of taking care of the ladies when his "replacement" is a good 13 - 15 months from doing the same job? Maybe I misunderstood the original post.

We're a small operation and only process around 24 head a year, last year we AI'd and wondered why we spent the time with bulls in years past. Don't have to wonder how a bull calf will develop these days, they don't stay that way for long.

A three year old bull is just coming into his own. Hereford bulls in my experience are the easiest to get along with on average. I still have one doing just fine at 9 years old. The only thing I have noticed in him is that he don't let me walk up to him anymore. When I get within 20 feet of him he just turns and walks away.

I would have the vet out to semen test the newborn, probably next week. Don't want to keep him for a bull if he is infertile. If you could post a picture of the newborn that would be helpful as well. Most of us can tell by looking whether or not he will amount to anything, as long as he is less than a week old. :)
