Every spring, we test, worm, vaccinate all the bulls that will see service during the year. They also all get clipped off, and get a bath during the week before our annual open house. I started with the reds this weekend, since it takes longer for the coat color to blend. Here's what I have done so far....

Boot Jack Apollo, March 2010 purebred Limi. And yes, I did dust them for lice before I turned them out.
 
And finally, Boot Jack Hemi, a fall 2014 purebred Limi. I wish he would have stood better for a photo. I really like this guy and plan to show him in Louisville this fall..

are lice what give them the bald spots mine have bald spots and i didn`t know why

Ez, the lice make them itch, so they scratch till they are bald. It's a common issue with our winters. A good dose of Python dust usually does the trick.

BlessYourHeart! Glad it's you and not me the boss and I both hate clipping so not a favorite chore at our place. We don't show cattle so can avoid the task most of the time. When we have to get them ready for a sale we singe the hair off that way we only have to clip the head. Lazy man/woman way to clip. :D

So if u singe the hair it does the same as clipping? That would have been easy and good to know!

This is a pretty good video on it. Pretty slick way to get them clipped.

That looks like it could go really wrong really fast

Id probably have bald cattle if i tried it :lol:
 
I have thought about torching them. I like the practice I get clipping though, since it can be a while between shows. Plus, you still have to clip their heads when you torch them. And, I detest the smell of burning hair! :yuck: Torching works great for some, but it's not in my plans.

BTW, thanks for the kind words on my boys! I plan to clip 7 or so of the mature black bulls this weekend, so I will post more pics next week.
 
Nice boys! I sometimes clip cows that have lice, and then they can rub the rest of them off.. usually they won't have a louse the next year... I clip short though (1/4") which isn't 'show' clipping. I have a couple cows that know what the clippers are.. they'll fight over who gets clipped FIRST, and I have to separate them out or there'll be too much interference.

My clippers are really dull this year and I haven't bothered with it.
Here's a pic of a freshly clipped cow in my style.. I leave their mane and face or they just look too funny

 
Nesi, we clip some that short during the summer, but it's still cold at night right now. I need them ready to show off on may 14th, so I can't wait till it's warmer out. Thanks for the kind words all!
 
:P Well, I got 8 more bulls clipped up this weekend. I remembered to snap pictures of most of them, so here goes.

First is CLF Cold Cash, a spring 2014 born purebred Angus sired by Barstow Cash.
