We have been fighting a respiratory problem for the last 2 years, and can't seem to make an improvement. The general consensus is BRSV. We just had a yearling heifer posted and results are pending. This is crazy!!! :shock: We treat about 40 head of calves annually! We are looking for anyone else who has dealt with this and can give us some advice on vaccination programs, vaccine brands, or treatments. This has been showing up in older calves up to this yearling heifer. All have the same symptoms---heaving cough, droopy, high temp, off feed, gets worse if you move them. thanks

what have you been treating them with? for chronic resp relapses i have dosed a macrolide antibiotic with good success.

What are you vaccinating with? We use Cattlemaster Gold FP5 L5, and hit them with a booster 30 days later for lepto and BRSV for the heifers.
One very distinct symptom of brsv is swelling under the chin. I have seen a lot of brsv, (ran a starter yard), and temp was usually low grade fever. If they are running a very high fever, more than likley you are dealing with a bacterial infection.
Most vets around here recommend ampicillin & recovr over several days. I have not treated for brsv the last few years so I do not know the effectivness the newest drugs on the market would have. When dealing with a viral infection, you are basically trying to prevent the secondary bacterial infection from moving in until the animal gets back to reasonable health. That being said I would think products like draxxin would be a wise or at least convient choice.

Are you talking about calves raised on cows or purchased calves?

I strongly recommend a MLV vaccine - many brands out there. But you have to READ THE LABELS. Most need booster for the BRSV. Also, the "mixed" vaccines don't normally cover Pasteurella - which is a big respiratory problem.
If you don't booster properly, you might as well not buy anything.
If these are calves raised on cows, you can vaccinate your cows with MLV PRIOR to breeding, that way you can vaccinate the CALVES after they are 3 months of age for all the respiratory illnesses, and again at weaning time.
