broken legs- 2 in one night

In 25 years of dealing with cattle, I have seen exactly 1 broken leg...and that was human error because we left a piece of landing mat by a water tank. Now fast forward 25 years....my father-in-law found a 1500# bred cow with a broke back leg above the knee. Also a smaller heifer with a broken front leg above the knee. The legs are obviously broken.

I am going to go walk the pasture tomorrow and try to find something...anything...that they could have gotten tangled up in. I guess they could have been kicked by another cow but this herd has been together for many many years and never had a problem before.

I am baffled. We butchered the big cow today...the smaller one is probably not far away. My first thought is some one got to chasing them with a pickup and bumped them. I will be looking for tire tracks. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I've seen a few (including a couple that healed - keep that in mind for the heifer) most hit by vehicles and a few caught in cattle guards. Two at the same time sure is strange.

If you have dillers, and who doesn;t these days, look for their holes. Seems like they will go almost straight down 2-3 feet.

yep.. could be the armadillo or gopher holes...

Sounds like it could have been dogs running them--
We have had group leg problems(including broke) after dogs have been at them at night.

my area in north east ala. >the potentail area < on the map.. got just a few right now but more are popping up have yet to see one on my place or any sign's so TNBP's area above chattanooga and me.. may not have many either
