ai season's in full swing - really HOT heats this year. Last year I could barely tell who was coming in and now it's insane. I get a couple in heat at once it's hard to tell who's in heat and who's just along for the ride . . . so to speak. Throw in all the bull calves running around and it's quite a scene. It's a true cluster fudge.

I breed a ten thousand cow 97% AI herd. Last year when the employee that runs my sync program went on vacation, we switched from lut shots six days a week accross the entire dairy with most ending in timed AI to lut when spare employees were available and breed on observed heat... These are four hundred cow pens we're talking about... By the time he got back from vacation, they had lost six head in the party and crippled up a few more. I actually saw a train of cows riding at one point.

What's tricky is deciding what to do with those couple that sure seem wound up enough to be in heat, but never stand - they just run around humping everything else. Had one cow that was only a week outside calving and she was doing everything BUT standing.
