Tomorrow night at Lee Farmers Livestock Market in Jonesville VA. Special cow sale. Come and bring lots of money. I will haul them Friday morning for you.

Had a special cow sale in Staunton Tues eve... There were some nice cows with 150-250 lb calves... some bred back and confirmed 2 months or so... which would be about right with the age of the current calves on them... How does $3900 sound ???? WAYYYY too much for my blood... there were several groups that brought over $3,000... and a good number that brought in the $23-2700 range.
Then there were cows just bred... some 4-7 months... most were short mouth or broken mouth... and they were in the $2-2400 range...
Broken mouth cows bred 1-3 months were all bringing $15-1800... with NO calves on them... so 16-18 months to get a saleable calf... The were weighing in the 11-1400 lb range...
Bred heifers were mostly in the $1800 -2500 range.
There were some 2 yr old "heifers" that were probably 3 days shy of being 3 yr olds by the look of them.

Many of the short bred cows were bought by one of the buyers that also buys cull/pound cows at the regular sales. Kinda know where they were going and it was not back to the farm to eat for 6 months to maybe have a live calf...
Another thing, many of the older cows had NO UDDER... so not like someone pulled calves off and sold them and then sold the cows... these were dried up bags... so who knows how long since they had had their last calf. Who wants to feed a cow for 6-7 months before she calved... then wait another 6-8 months to have a calf to sell... ??????

Son said maybe we ought to sell the cows... he was half serious....

I've been wanting to attend all week long, but have been running a fever and feeling like **** since Sunday. I still might come check it out. I'm gonna go ahead and assume I won't wanna afford anything up there tonight. I'm looking for the 1800 to 2500 dollar deals.

There will be some in that price range. I took 14 bred cows, 10 pairs, and 2 bulls for my brother in law this morning. He is no longer able to keep them.

Went by there on my way back from Walmart and some pretty nice cows with big calves. Not up to date on prices, but I bet they sell good.

Anybody could easy sink a pile of money in a few cows as I saw it happen before 2014 and never thought they would come back down to earth and the next year they did.

They had 300+ bred cows at La Grande today. I got one cow. Sat on my hands a lot. Groups of 5-15 old cows broken and smooth mouth that were 5-6 months bred sold for $1,800. Didn't make sense to me. Pay $1,800 for old cows when solid mouth cows were selling for $2,000. I wrote down the first 3 bunches through the ring. 39 head of solid mouth black cows bred 5 months weighing 1,243 sold for $1,900. 27 head of solid black cows weighing 1,310 bred 5-6 sold for $1,95. 33 head of solid black cows weighing 1,312 bred 5-6 sold for $2,025. I am willing to go to $1,600 on good quality BM cows and I didn't even bother to raise my hand.

Well, I attended the sale, and didn't buy this time, but enjoyed watching everybody else spend their money. There was 5 4 Yr. olds without calf that needed some more groceries looked like that looking back wish I had bid on, but they went from $1700 up.

Bred commercial heifers were selling in Alberta for $6700 Canadian loonies this week. That's $4750 Yankee bucks.
At least two guy are confident in the cattle market

Heifer was a very high quality.
Cow was above average.
Both FB Japanese Blk.

My philosophy on my farm is "everything is for sale" - based on how much I wanted to keep them. My absolute want to "keeper" price has been $6,000. Most everything else has been $2500 - $4500. I raised my absolute "keeper" price to $8000. I've sold 5 between $4500 (1 - early PICK price of newborns by 3-15) and $6500. Might have the $8000 sold also. Crazy money out there, but I can't sell much cheaper when I can get so much $$ at the sale barn.

Attended a monthly cow sale last night (the yards closest to my home) and found the prices a little lower than I expected. Almost 300 head including one dispersal sale of about 30 cows. There were a lot of older cows and some questionable heifers that kept prices averaging lower.

Only a couple of pairs brought $3000, most in the $2,200 to 2,400 range. The better heavy springers brought up to $2,200 with most around $1,800. Spring calvers a couple of hundred less than that.

Went to a special cow sale in Fairview today. Highest was some heifer pairs at $4400/pair. Most in the 3-3500 range. I bought one of the "cheaper" pairs at 2750.
Majority of breds were 25-31. Rain made a difference i reckon.
