Breeding and Color Combination

I know you better be careful with Herefords or you can end up with surprises at a very early age.

Maybe a little bit of both. I have a hereford heifer that will calve at 16 months. She is bred to a bull calf that is the same age that was mixed in with her for a matter of hours while I was mending the fence. Both were 7 months old at the time of the "incident".

angus are the same way, we had that one heifer that calved at 13-15 months of age. (not really sure what it was) but that means 4-6 months old when bred....

I have a black cow that has a red calf every year no matter what she is bred to.
The last two years she has been bred to a reg. black angus bull.

I wonder (I know, I do that alot)if maybe the mutation type of deal that caused the original polled gene from horned may do the same thing with the color gene at times.

well dun a AI bull we used has a mutant Wild Color gene. He's a registered angus and is on the Accelerated Genetics website. http://www.accelgen.com angus sires 7270 is his short name

Both I know if your keeping some replacement heifers,best make sure no little boys are near by. I have seen romantic interludes at six months.
