Breeding a crossbred bull question?

Got a 7/8 Angus and 1/8 longhorn calf thinking about keeping for a bull because he looks really good. The longhorn was a red longhorn which was bred to a registered Angus threw a black hfr with no horns looked Angus. Kept her bred to a different registered Angus she had a black hfr. This bull calf is out of that hfr and a different registered Angus. Curious if a kept him and put him with back with black cows if he would throw black calves? I'm certain he would. Not sure about if I put him with my red cattle though. He has 3 different Angus bulls in his backgroud.

To be honest he's almost to be purebred and his calves will be 15/16 Angus with very tiny Longhorn blood in them. He will definitely throws black calves and there is a chance that he could be homozygous black as well.

I agree with you.

Thanks for the info. May have a DNA test run depending on the cost. If I don't it may just be the old fashion way keep him and see what I get.

I can testify from experience that the red coat color gene and the horn gene can roll along unexpressed for multiple generations.
He may be black and polled, but he may not be homo black or homo polled. With my luck, he'd be neither ;>(

Most LH like Brahman have the African horn gene and it doesn't play by the rules. Neighbor leases my Angus for his small bunch of LH/Angus cross cows every now and then he gets horns.
He gets a skunk pattern as well from time to time.

I've got a bull 50/50. We call him Zippy b/c his back looks like he's being unzipped with a white layer underneath the black. Their color patterns are all over the place.

Very few LH carried African Horn gene and if it's solid black, it's unlikely for them to throw a skunktail.

If you gad said almost any breed, besides LH, I would have said your fine. A LH cross seems to defy the normal parameters of genetics.

You really need to quit picking on him CB. He's a good reader and studies cattle by the books. But in real life dealings and what actually can happen can't be learned from a book.

Gaurus agrees with him though. Which also rhymes with Taurus.

They probably read and study the same books.

I like how you assume that Gaurus is me, without checking out the facts.

7/8, if you look at Charolais Bull registration, is considered full blood so with that I don't think you will have a problem. With the small amount of Longhorn though anything can happen. We don't have anything with that small amount of Longhorn in it but I've learned with our Longhorn's and longhorn crosses that anything can happen. I figure you will get a few horns here and there and probably some red from time to time as well with some occasional chrome possibilities I could be wrong on that however.
If you like the calf and his breeding keep him and roll with him. I don't see a problem doing it. Seems like he has a lot of good blood in him as well having the 3 different types of bulls.
