Breed switch

We are switching from limo's to herefords. We really liked the South Devon as well. It was all about temperment.

Maybe she just got tired of being chased over the fence.

Their are crazy ones in every breed.

I prefer the herefords but if I had to switch it would be to herf cows and blackangus bulls or red angus bulls. Kind of tired of seeing all black. I like a little color.JHH

P.S. I have less eye problems than both my neighbors and they raise black angus.BUT I dont have 70 head either.

You guys need to talk to a few more breeders of black cattle about eye problems. From what I understand Herefords have just the same eye problems as every other breed. You can just see it a lot better on a white face. Talk to some angus breeders, if they are truthful they will tell you they have eye problems too.

I would probably switch to either red angus or limousin (reds)

If I got rid of my Black Angus bulls - I would lose my mind - maybe start raising rabbits or something.

Try raising Chinchilla's! That will really 'blow your mind!' They have 17 different Genes in just determining shades of White!! (Underbelly color). Then you cross that with shades of Black, Agouti, Beige and all phases OF those colors - Extra Dark, Dark, Medium, Medium Light and Light. And that is not to mention all the dozens of Pastel colors that you may desire - or not - - as the case may be! :shock: :shock: :roll:

I raise Brangus and I like BrahmanxBritish genetics. I'd probably go with Brafords if I were to change.

I wouldn't switch our breed out for a different one. Ok, rethought it and, if I had to switch, I would go with Red Angus based on 1 bottle babies performance. Probably not the best basis, but there is is. :lol: :lol: :lol:

You are right, we made terrible management choices. We did not look past "growth, carcass yeild, no eye problems" to other things that turned out to be more important for us. We ignored the advice of our vets, cattle haulers and experienced cattle men and women. Our limos are BEAUTIFUL to look at at - through binoculars. I understand that there are crazies in every breed and i am sincerely happy for you that you have nice cattle with workable temperments. I have already taken your advice and selected for docility and you are right again - we have no temperment problems and the herefords we selected are doing very well.

But if you took those 2 out. Based on some limited experience with all I would go with crosses of herfie,gelbveigh and simmental. But I am hearing so much good about reds and red polled that they could find a way in as well.

Happy with what I have right now though. No "wild ones" allowed to stay around here, and only a couple have met that description, a simm cow and a limo/pied cross.

I woudn't raise another purebred breed. If we had to get rid of the Angus, we'd go commercial.

We have mostly Pb Simmental. I'd switch to anything that hopefully wouldn't turn black, Polled Herefords or Red Angus.

Since I don't have a breed, I won't be doing any switching. But, I would get rid of all else besides the Char-Ang, Gelb-Ang, Lim-Ang, and Bra-Ang. Give me another lifetime and I'd narrow it down to one maybe. That's a dopey post, sure, but there it is.

If I switched from Herefords, I would go with Traditional (aka REAL) Simmentals (or possibly Gelbvieh). I have occasionally considered throwing some Simmental genes back into the commercial cowherd. Our best commercial cows ever were 3/4 Hereford, 1/4 Simmental. Milk, growth and muscle attract me too them. The biggest reason I continue to keep them out of the cowherd is because I prefer to have 50 straightbred Hereford cows versus 30-35 Simmford cows. Definite difference in hay consumption. :)
