Brangus okay with youngsters?

We have 42 acres in Palmer, TX. We'd like to run 15 - 20 head of registered stock. This will be more a hobby than anything else. I have two grandkids that might wander around in the pasture. Would Brangus be okay or are they too ornery? I was also considering Angus or Longhorns. Any comments are appreciated.

You might try some Charolais. There are some well known breeders close to you.

Doofis? Hell, you can't spell either!. ;-) MY grandkids are in the pasture with mine all the time. You must have only seen a few, huh? I'm sure there are some wild ones just as there are in any breed. Depends on who raises 'em. Doofis? OK, Gomer!

We don't need a bunch of name calling. It has been my experience that Brangus and Charolais are not near as docile as Angus or Herefords. therefore I would go with Angus as first choice and Hereford as second choice. Brangus would be 3rd choice.

if you want cattle that grandkids can around that would be herefords. they are easy going an gentle. dont run when ppl walk around them. scott

If I wanted dog gentle look at Registed British Whites nothing else comes close. They are like pets. There is a large Operation out of Bealls Tx.

PS don't put a hereford bull on them calfs come out ugly.

I'd select Herefords or Angus rather than Brangus. I'm kind of partial to Herefords myself.

My choice for quiet cattle are South Devon,Hereford and Galloway. In that order.
Teach the grand kids to walk about them not to run amongst them, because that will scare the quietest cattle.

Out of those three i would go in this order. Brangus, Angus, Longhorn. you can get gentle ones in any breed. just make that a priority in selection or get some young stuff and gentle them down.

Did you finally get home to see that calf? Is he to ugly to post a picture. I am curious to see a BW/Hereford cross Camp.

I would suggest that it isn't the breed that's going to matter, as much as it will be the individuals within a breed.

A lot of my cows don't care for children at all, but are fine around adults. That's probably because we don't have children, so they aren't used to them. You may want to consider cattle that have been around kids previously.

I have to go with bull lady here. It all depends on how that particular animal was raised. Ours arn't touched too much till weaning. The ones we retain are exposed to the kids the day they are put in the "escape" proof weaning pen. Kids are in the barn, pup is in the barn and the horses are used to work them. They see burlap bags flying, hear kids screamimg the whole works.

But we also have an old cow that hates kids. She's fine with us but the second she sees the kids she goes balistic. Raises one heck of a calf and we've never had problems with her daughters. The kids know to look out for Redeye. They stay outside the coral till she is caught.

Both ends of the spectrum in my hereford herd.
I tried for years to teach the kids that black cows are bad. Had them believing it too. They never gave the commercial calves a second look cause they were black. Till this little fur ball hit the ground. And 6 years of teaching went out the door the minute they laid eyes on her. She has been weaned four days now. And is the almost as bad as a lap dog. :roll:

Now back to Brangus Hell I just as soon put my grandkids in a pen with a grizzly bear.
Them cows is still 3/8 brammers and get here with a lit fuse or a box of matches.
