Due to a layoff here in Orlando it looks likes I might be heading to Denver with the same company I am currently with. A couple of ? for you Coloradians .I did live in Arvada, Co. for a few years but at that time I had no cattle and now have 150 head in Fl.
1. How many head per Ac. does the pastures in Co. support?
2. Someone told me to get into backgrounding calves in this area.
3. What areas of Colarado does most of the cattle are being pastured?
4. Ton's more of ?? but let's start here.
 
Colorado is beautiful country...I lived in Denver area for 10 years between 1975 and 1986. It can be difficult in winter though. Denver is in a "dish" on Eastern slope. I would imagine now things have changed a lot there.

My "guess" would be that heading North toward Greeley as well as East and Southeast from Denver would be the best chance for cattle. Also possibly some property in foothills. The farther East and SE from Denver you get you get into "barren, sand, and blowing snow in winter". Think there are some ranches East of Colorado Springs. Also some NW up in Salida. "Might" even be some property around Parker and Castle Rock area suitable for cattle.

Difficulty would be getting away from the high dollar turista areas.

Things are a lot different. Parker, Castle Rock, no chance. If you're going to raise cattle to make some money, you have to go way east. If you want (pardon my language) a hobby ranch, Weld county is your best bet close to the Denver metro area.

Pardon my S/A answer but that is like asking "How long is a string?" There are way to many variables, as to grass, type of cattle, weather conditions at the time and so on. On every pasture one must stock it up the point it is being grazed properly. That can vary from one pasture to another, and from one season to another.

Don,t have a clue,but wish I was there. Driveing thru the state I would also have to agree with the east. Maybe goats in the west.
 
You might contact the Colorado Dept of Ag for specfic info to your questions. Thats all the help availabe from me, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn in Colorado Springs.
 
Does that mean you will have to change your screen name? I mean, you can hardly be Central Florida Firecracker if you are in Colorado. Just wondering. :D

I am a true Fla Cracker, just living in LA (lower Alabama) :lol:
 
It must be exciting and daunting to move a distance like you are. I have moved a few times in the past 30 or so years. You move onto a new place and you busily hurry to change things you want every thing done yeaterday. Good luck I'm looking forward to a trip to the US one day. Colorado will be a definite place to visit along with Texas,Oklahoma.Montana,Washington state and probably every other one as well. Theres 50 isn't there?
