Those are nice calves from those dyslexic black cows. Makes folks scratch there head seeing black cows with those nice red calves.

It was a beautiful 55 degrees here this morning. We are supposed to crack 100 next week. One extreme to the next.

We turned out on Saturday. That is nearly a month later then we turned out last year. But last year was a couple weeks earlier than normal. Some years are warm and wet. Others are cold and dry.
If we’d had any rain this spring we could have turned out a week ago. I can only feed for two more weeks so I guess that’s when we’re turning out
That was rule of thumb years ago when it was difficult or impossible to get hay into this area. Old neighbors ran out of hay in late March. My mother in law asked their little daughter if there was anything for them to eat. She said not much but they have lots to drink.

I've never fed hay past about May 1 here. Ordered another semi load of hay a week and a half ago and feeding about 25# of 3rd cut alfalfa. Pastures may be short but the cows look great. Will start syncing them up in 10 days. Need to go check the biggest lease pastures to see if there is even enough grass to make it worth the haul. Selling down 10-15% to make less mouths to feed. Feedlot down the road can deliver a TMR ration to a sacrifice pasture for $4.00/hd/day. I can still get truckloads of alfalfa for around $165/ton and feed cows myself for less than $3.00 per head per day. LFP will pick up a fair amount of this cost. If we had commercial cattle, we would probably sell down at least 50%. One inch of rain would make a huge difference right now.

I've never turned out before May 15th and I've fed hay as late as June 13ish. So we are right on track for a "normal" year. Last two days have been scorching with temps hitting 90° (which is unusual for us in July and unheard of in May), and the forecast is for some snow this weekend, crazy.

Mother Nature must've figured to send super warm temps to melt the record snow, then figured you might get a "kick" out of a late little snow to remind you she is in charge???;) :rolleyes::rolleyes:
