We have a 14 month old heifer calf that her moma wouldn't take at the time she was born. We bottle fed her and she looks very healthy but is stunted. I would guess she weighs appx. 650lbs. Will she always be a runt or will she some day catch up to the others? I've been told yes and no.

Thanks,

Years ago i got my sons a couple baby calves(1 hereford and 1 baldie) to bottle feed , good lookin' calves but they too seemed stunted at about a year old. I had to sale them along with everything else.It seems my x wife was alergic to cattle dust and everything else we had around.(should have kept the livestock) :lol:There's just something in moms milk that can't be totally replaced.

it has been said many times on these boards that at 15 months the calf is 65% of its mature weight... that would make your calf mature out at about 1000# if your estimate is right on her current weight. that's not bad.

I would keep her on a good 14 % ration and not let her get fat. When she is 15 months breed her. She will be good. I like cows that are mature weight of 1000 to 1200 lbs. They seem(to me) to keep better and convert better. She will be alright. You never know this maybe your ticket back in to raising cattle.

She is an Angus and I guess I should have first stated that I'm lousy at guessing weights. Just ask my wife. No, don't ask my wife. The heifer could weigh much less. She looks about as tall as the eight month olds being weaned but much broader and thicker.

This is probably just for trying to make me feel better about the whole thing since she is a pet of my wife's. Thanks for the responses.

How tall are you and how high does she come on your side. Waste high belly botton high. Thye will weigh more than you think.

not bad for bottle raised angus. my son bought a small bred heifer at a sale for a cheap price about 3 years ago & she has raised three nice calves & only weighs about 900 lbs now. he figures she makes him more money than all his others. eats less & weans just as big a calf.

I was talking to my wife last night and she thinks she weighs around 600lbs. We have decided to keep her. Thanks for the replies. It is good to hear other peoples experiences.

Love this board.
