Okay, i just read a forum about "bottle jaw." I think this is what my calf and it's mom has. The mother is extremely skinny no matter how much hay she intakes. Her scour is just water. The calf has a bump on one side of her jaw. Some people said to worm the calf. I have never wormed a calf or cow before. What do I use? Where can I get it?

What were the conditions that he had them in for them to get in such bad shape? If you ever send them back, they will return to their present condition. Anyway............. The vet needs to look at the cow too. Sounds like she is having some major problems. Makes me think about coccidiosis. If she has it, then the baby does too most likely. But it could be so many things causing the scours. I think I would pull the vet in on this one. Then I would give a bill to the jerk that didn't take care of them in the first place, and make sure that the bill is worth more than the cow and calf. Then tell him you'll settle the bill with an even swap on the pair. People that will not, or can not take care of an animal does not need to own any. :mad:

I agree with you Chuckie. I don't think these people need to own any animals. Yes, these are the only two I have because I am not into the cattle business. I am only an animal lover. These people are "friends" and yes, they are paying for the expenses.
One question about worming. I went to the farm store today and it looks like there are a variety of options to dealing with worms. There is the paste, the spray that you put on their back, the injections, and pills. Which one is better? and more effective.

What ever you decide to do, do it fast! sounds like momma is on a down hill slide. And while your at it, do some research on how to keep cattle fed and healthy, always worth the effort. :cboy:

You may want to do a search here on "Johnes" disease. The symptoms of the cow sound very much like that could be a possibility. Unfortunately, there is no cure.
I would use the pour on wormer. Don't buy a whole bottle. Someone around you should be able to pull enough out of a bottle to worm her. Try the vet. They have one called Eprinex that rain doesn't wash off. Then there is just Ivermectin, and you pour it on their back. I agree with Medic, you need to get on this quick.
I went to the farm store today to buy the pour on wormer. This guy who said he has been raising cattle for years and years said I am not suppose to use the pour-on wormer for any cattle under 500# or I will kill it. The instruction on the box only indicated that I should use the dosage based on it's weight but not limiting it to under 500#. Is this guy right?

Get the vet to check them out-it doesn't sound good. They probably need more than wormer. Do they have ample pasture, minerals etc.?
