I have a 9 day old calve that i cant get to drink more than a pint of milk replacer at a time is that allright or should he be drinking more or is that plenty he moves around but does sleep alot is there something i should be doing :cboy:

Unless you are feeding it 8 times a day I would say you have a SERIOUS problem. I think you have a sick baby.

Take it's temp and check the naval. Then get back to us.

Forgot to ask is it in with other animals ie.cows with calves at their side or is it by itself?

Well then there is absolutely no possibility it is stealing milk....Your calf is sick take it's temp and check it's naval.

Let us know what you find?

When he drinks does he gurgle or cough?

That temp is right on the line ,he is approaching a fever. Did you check the naval is it dry and soft?

If it were mine I would give him Nuflor and banamine or predef, I would give the Predef in his case because it is a steroidal anti inflammatory and it will help with his appetite.

What does he weigh?
Being a holiday I don't know where you are going to get meds unless you have them on hand?

What do you have access to?

he weighs about 100 -125 somewhere in there i canget meds at tractor supply if they would have them on his naval what should i look for iam new to the cattle thing so all help will be appreciated thanks again

His naval needs to cleaned what would you suggest to use to clean it. How many cc's of the meds do I give him...should I also give a dose to the other calf to be sure that she is not getting sick.

All you can get is penicillin from them, but that will have to do unless you have a friend or neighbor that has a more intensive operation and carries real meds. Tomorrow you will need to get to your vet and get some medication that will actually work. You may end up having to tube him if he does not want to eat. For now feed him small amounts often.

Get normal penicillin not long acting. Also you will need needles and syringes but "they" should be able to help you with the size of gage you will need.

Keep them separate they should be OK. Does he have a naval infection?

Windell is out cleaning his naval now, this is his wife BJ. Not sure what all he told you, but we are brand new at this and a bit worried what we are doing. The naval has maggots crawling on it, so he is going to clean it with soap and water and we have some great stuff we got out of Oklahoma for our horses, it is a spray cleanser and antiseptic. We are trying to get in touch with our vet now for the steroids. The older calf has a slight cough, and only once in a while...the lady we got them both from this weekend said it was just allergies.

thx so much for you time and helping us.

Is it maggots from flies that have hatched in his naval? You can use hydrogen peroxide on the naval as well.

Make sure both animals are in a clean environment. At this point I would treat both animals for pneumonia.
Can you get Nuflor and an anti inflammatory from you vet. Or even if you can get someone to look at them.

Where they were was not the best environment, but we have them in a very clean place. My husband is trying another large animal vet in town. We'll keep trying until we get someone to answer and we'll go pick it up ourselves.

thx again and we'll let you know what happens.

BJ
