O.K. so many books have been recommended on here it is pretty confusing for a greenhorn like myself. My history is very little knowledge of the cattle business so how bout everyone that is willing, tell me what would be the best book to read FIRST. I know there will probably many opinions but I'll just narrow it down and choose what seems to be the most recommended.

Storey's Guide is in my truck all the time. It is my "bible".

you might want to also try Raising a Calf for Beef. Takes you from birth all the way to butchering.

There is a magazine out from the popular farming series called cattle, alot of good information.

Then keeping livestock healthy also a storey book
Then Merc Vet manual.
"A Field Guide to Cows" I think it might be a storeys book to.


For magazines I recommend
"The Cattleman"
"Progressive Farmer"
Tn cattlemans Association Publication "Tennessee Cattle Business"

I have been taking Progressive Farmer for nearly 30 years but will not renew. It is now mainly that "let's move to the country and buy 5 acres and pretend to be farmers crap".

I also don't recommend The Merc Vet manual for a beginner unless he has a background in medicine.

I like "Calving the Cow and Care of the Calf" and "Cattle Ailments- Recognition and Treatment. Both are by Eddie Straiton an English vet.

I agree, the Merck manual may not always be first choice for a beginner.

I would recommend reading "Knowledge Rich Ranching" first as it is about the business side of cattle. Cattle cycle, cost control, leasing vs buying land, etc.
