Mapquest will get you there on the routing you mentioned. Check the road conditions first. I live in Kingsport in ne Tennessee, and the morning weather indicated that some of the schools in NC were closed this morning due to a late Spring snow. Also, some very strong winds are forecast, over 50 mph gusts in the higher elevations.
An alternative is to drive south on 221 to 19E to I-40 west.
Either way, a lot of mountain driving.
