I have a cow that has a snotty nose with a little blood mixed in.. The snot is a white almost yellow tint.. There is a little red coloration in it that I am assuming is blood. She is not haveing trouble breathing but I can hear her weasing from the build up in her nostrils.. Also one of her eyes is watering real badly but she has both eyes open.. Any idea what might be her problem? Should I giver her a shot of antibiotic? Thank you

Banamine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic drug. It will do nothing for 'allergies'; it's not an antihistamine-type drug.
Given by its approved route - IV - its effective lifespan in the cow is about 8 hrs.
You could pee in her ear and it would do about as much good, if you're actually dealing with an allergic condition.
It seems your veterinarian recommended something he considered relatively innocuous that you could do, and essentially 'do no harm', but that's not necessarily the case.
Banamine, given IM, is actually quite irritating - less so than Bute(not approved for use in food animals) - but causes tissue damage all the same - and while the meat withdrawal time for a single dose of IV Banamine is only 4 days, a single IM injection can result in tissue residues out beyond 30 days.
I know...you're not planning to slaughter this cow... but why use a drug unnecessarily? And what if something happened and you were no longer in the picture and your family decided to just liquidate the herd - is anyone going to know that this cow has been treated?
Unnecessary use/abuse/misuse of drugs & antibiotics gives all of us in food animal production a black eye - whether deserved or not. I'd like to see less of that. We all - veterinarians included - need to be thinking about that before we 'shoot 'em up'.

I can only do as im advised on that right or wrong. I know what your saying and dont want to give anything not needed, the Hexasol is an antibiotic with a little extra the way i understand it ,and by her being bred its limited to what she can get.
It has cooled off here and she is better so i havent done anything yet, but i will try and get ahead of it for next week, if you can recomend something different i would appreciate it.

dun - bingo! It's just something for that client to do - but it's really not as innocuous as most would like to think.
Too many folks think that just because their cow, kid, dog, has a sniffle or sneeze, that they need a shot or a pill. Too many doctors and vets buckle to the pressure to give or prescribe something just to satisfy that client - even when it's not necessary or indicated. Been there, tried not to do it with my clients - and attempted to explain to them WHY...

bse - I was unfamiliar with Hexasol - it's essentially LA-300 with Banamine in it.
Tincture of time and close observation is what I'd use. If the cow is otherwise normal, eating, cleaning her nose, etc., and the blood is no longer there, *I'm* not doing anything to her. The stress of trying to get that one cow up to treat is harder on her - and me! - than any benefit either of us would gain from the exercise.

The case Tbrake and bse both are describing sounds like sinus infections. The allergies may have been the cause.
I hear wheezing on a regular basis. I have one cow that wheezes when she is out of breath, i.e., runs up the hill to get feed when she is called. I have another cow that commonly is blowing out her nose holes. It is funny. It looks like she closes off her nasal passages, builds up some pressure and then lets it blow. I have seem mucus fly through the air with some good range on it. Even been hit by it. On occassion, it is bloody snot. This has been going on for 3 years. I discussed it with the vet and he said leave her alone unless she has a more significant issue.
The one that worries me is a spring calf. That calf is fine and healthy but must have some congestive tissue in his right nostril. The wheezing does not come from the chest. You can hear it right there in the right nostril. It rarely goes away. I keep asking Blue to sneak in and spray some antihistimine in that nostril but he just looks at me.

Well it's been over a week and the cow still has a snotty nose with a little blood.. I listened to you guys and I decited to let it go and see if it got any better but it has not.. She is still eating good and looks fine, but she is constantly weasing and I can usually hear her over the other cows for up to 30 yards away.. I don't know what I should do? Thank you
She may have something stuck up there that's irritating it. I once lost a cow that had enhaled a bunch of star thistle, they ened up in her lungs. If your vet has one of those deals that he can look up her nose/airways with it may be worth while to have him take a peak.
Turned out to be pneumonia.. Vet gave her a shot of antibiotic and said if she's not better in to days to giver her a shot of draxxion. Well she wasn't any better to I gave her 10 mls of draxxion this morning.. Hope it helps. Thank you for all your help
