Ga.prime, your pastures look a lot like ours. The oats we dry planted the 20th of September is now sprouting after our 9/10ths. The oats we planted the 13th of September that came up and got its first rain is going to town making roots. Hoping it will give up a little protien grazing in a few weeks.
John, I picked a few "green" calves today..... I think I hit a sweet spot... Sold 3745 lbs of calves for $96.80 less than I sold 5120 lbs. of calves for 34 days ago or the same money per head as those sold 60 days ago and weighing an average of 97 lbs a head more.
Wish I could have made the sale. Maybe the price is up that much but it has been looking like lighter calves are at a premium now and a 350 lb steer brings $15 a head less than the 450 lb steer which bring about $20 less than a 525 lb steer. Crazy the way it is sometimes. But without much green grazing and no confidence in moisture I sold em and got the $500 - $550 a head I shoot for and did it with much younger calves. Wonder what they would be worth or bring 2 months from now.
Always great to get a rain........but the key to this rain is how long the wait is for the next...... :?
