I have a question? Can an adult cow survive blackleg and then end up lame? I thought it was fatal? Friend lost a gorgeous heifer to blackleg and says dam is limping for over a week from her case?
 
Most of the time it is fatal, unless treated real early. The cow will be lucky to ever lose that limp. If she lived a week without being treated it's a new one to me.

Can there may be a lingering illness if she has some immunity from an old vaccination?
 
I've seen mature cows that died of blackleg - with good history of being vaccinated as calves; enough of 'em that I booster blackleg vaccination on my cow herd every couple of years - cheap insurance. Most of the adult blackleg cases were in animals in estrus synchronization programs - makes me wonder if the prostaglandin injections may be causing some localized vasoconstriction/anaerobic conditions that allow germination of spores.

In 35+ yrs of veterinary experience, I've only seen ONE live blackleg-affected animal, and it was dead less than 12 hrs later.
Could this cow have sublethal blackleg? I doubt it; can't say 100% that she doesn't, but it's highly unlikely. I'd bet the limp is from something other than blackleg.
 
Thanks so much for the replies. I agree Lucky I think it was just a coincidence. I saw the dam and I think she just had a swollen foot.

What do you booster cows with annually?

I booster the mature cows with a 7-way Clostridial every 2 or 3 years.
Only regular yearly booster my adult cows get is a 5-way Lepto +HB.
