Black points???

Curious to hear what folks think about this. I've seen black hair in a tail, i've seen it speckled in the nose, in the ear hair but nothing as much as this cow has. I've heard it was avoided in the past but she is a nice cow. any thoughts?

This is her calf this year. Her 09 heifer calf has the same points just not as much but i don't have a picture of her.

It was very much frowned upon in the past and I'd say it's probably good to still try and avoid it if possible, but I wouldn't cull an otherwise good cow (with a sound pedigree) just because of a few unwanted hair. A friend of mine, who owns the oldest herd in SA, says that the few stray black hairs almost invariably traces back to older English genetics.

Black tails, black noses have been around "forever".
Also, if you have 8020 in the pedigree, you might even get big black "birthmarks" on the side too.

If color is a selection criteria for you, then think about using black hided animals and make them all black as the general market does still pay a premium for that. If you market in a value added situation, then don't worry about hide color and just work to improve what you got.

Got a bull that had alot of black on his tail. Didn't have a problem with him. Got some nice calves out of him.
Did have a cow years ago that had a funny black mark on her right shoulder. No idea of her breeding so I can't say who she was out of.

There are no black Herefords. Those are cross breeds.

So insinuations at all. Just the fact that the bull will occasionally throw some birthmarks. (Maybe I shouldn't have put it in quotes the first time.)
