What makes a Black Limousin black?

Are Limousins like Angus where there are two different color (black & red) genes?

Or are they black because of cross breeding another breed into Limousin?

I thought Limousins were red.

The association allows for breeding up and since black is dominant it doesn't take long to find cattle that are three quarters lim and still black if your first cross is homo black. The original lims are solid red but a lot of the registered stuff is high percentage lim but not 100%. Look up the registration number on whatever black bull you're looking at and you'll probably see something like 87% lim. Under 75% is still lim-flex which means high percentage angus.
