Black Baldy x Brahman?

I am starting out with beef cattle, I’m ready to purchase some heifers to breed this winter for fall 2020 calves. I really like the look and hybrid vigor of the “super baldy” but Brangus heifers are really high. I can afford about 50% more heifers if I choose to buy black baldies, but my question is - I would breed to a LBW bull for first calves but for their second calf on, if I breed them to a Brahman bull, will I get something similar to the super baldy? Or will I get a lot of color variation doing it that way? Calving issues maybe? Or what about breeding to a Brangus bull? The black baldies I’m looking at are really nice but I’m just afraid I won’t be able to get the Brahman influence in there efficiently if I don’t start out with the brangus heifers. I want to keep my replacement heifers every year and basically breed each generation to a bull which they have the least of in their genetics (angus, Hereford, or Brahman).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and experience!

Just my ""personal"" opinion..if I were going with the baldies, myself...id use a brangus bull..and breed a few generations in that direction...to build some consistency in the offsprings .thin down that red gene..those baldies will be red carriers ..i like taking one direction at a time.."""in crossbred cattle"" you may have a great cow..but you really don't know what you have..the good thing about the black baldy is,you have 2 great maternal breeds,in one..add a brangus too it and triple it..

It's not just Alacowman's opinion. If you have a herd of mixed cattle the buyers in Louisiana prefer that you put a Brangus bull on them.

A Brahman bull on Hereford x Angus baldies will not give you what is called a Super Baldie. A Super Baldie is 25% Brahman. Your calves would be 50% Brahman but probably would look 75% Brahman.

Look in the Louisiana Market Bulletin. It is a buyer's market this year. You can get a good F1 Brangus heifer for a fair price.

Do the super baldies for sale have any Brahman influence already?

I would go buy some straight Herefords or straight Angus and then put the Brahman bull out on them.

I'm not a super baldie fan for replacements. At that point just run good crossbred cows. I definitely would not pay any premium for them like an F1 or composite breed.

I didn’t figure y’all could get away with running cattle with no ear in Louisiana
Sanga breeds such as Tuli and Mashona do well in those conditions (Taurus Afrikanus) and composites Bonsmara and Senepol do well, all will produce good crosses to Indicus breeds as well without compromising heat and parasite tolerant traits.
