whats the best cross on baldy heifers. There out of a Hereford bull and black cows.

We go back with an Angus bull as most do in this area. It has worked well for us.

Go back on them with a black Simmental. (British x Continental) Get more pounds at weaning and great replacement heifers.

That heifer will be a dang big cow in a couple of years. I have used Simmental bulls on a baldie cows plenty. The steers are the best that I've ever raised But the cows just get to big and can't handle the hard times and heat.

I would think Angus bull would be the way to go especially given that they are heifers. After they have their first calf then depending on the direction you want to go, Angus, Simmental. Hereford would work in some cases too, but 3/4 Hereford wouldn't be for everyone as like in the picture in the above post there could be quite a bit of white, and some will also be red.

The Angus is supposed to have the largest/heaviest cow average of all breeds - now. So, I still say, find a good moderate Simmental bull, and benefit from the heterosis for your weaning weights.
That the whole purpose of the 3 way cross...but depending on that 3rd cross used, they don't always make efficient replacements...

Or a CE Simmental - just like you have to pick a CE Angus. Angus isn't the CE "breed" it used to be. They used to be the safe "go to" breed. If it was black, you were safe to breed to small heifers. Then the breeders started chasing the size of the Continentals and created better growth bulls that weren't as great on CE. Don't go blind into a breed - check stats.

Simmental is a northern breed and apparently works better in the northern climate. I was spooking around the the ASA website and noticed there was twice as many Simmental breeders in NY than FL. I knew Florida more cattle than NY, but didn't realize that Florida had 8 times as many cows as NY. The majority of cattle in Florida are now black and I'd venture to say it's not from using Simmental.

True Grit how dare you, sir!
Simmental is THE breed for all people and places.
Just because you cannot find one where the largest numbers of cattle exist is irrelevant.

The ole 2 cents: To the newbie asking the question that used to peess off Doc Harris u need to visit a large commercial operation and look at the cattle. The udders on most of the Simmental simply are not going to make it. Anything less than almost perfect hits the road here with the first calf. Don't fall for the "functional" argument from registered show cattle operations. Functional traits are the most important traits, and a sloppy udder is not functional.

If it functions as designed wouldn't it be considered "functional"??

I've never seen bad udders being prevalent in Simmental, worst udders/teats,I've ever seen were on Hereford..not prejudice either, I like both ""got some of both""decendants ...

JWB - I was and never have said Simmental was THE breed. Just pointing out that there are options out there other than Angus as THE breed for CE. And you need to visit a PB Simmental farm and observe the udders. We used to have too much milk, but never been a breed that had poor udders.
Grit - that was probably a good observation. More Simmental breeders in NY - hmmm - I must be doing a good job for the NY Simmental Assn, Secretary for 20+ years. Thank you! I take that as a compliment.
