Black, if you do basic genetics on a Punnett square, you will get a 50-50 shot at getting either baldies or solid-coloured calves:

B = baldy, b = solid

Bb x bb = genotypically (genetically) Bb, Bb, bb, bb = phenotypically (physically or what you see) 50% Bb and 50% bb

Are motley face and baldies genetically separate? Kinda like scurs and horns are genetically different.

They probably are, but I don't think they're as genetically separate as with horns and scurs. A hereford is just as likely to produce a baldy as a brockle-face (or motley-face) calf, if they were genetically different a herf would produce more baldies than brockle-faced calves. However, Simmentals is a breed that has a much higher likely of producing baldies than brockle-faces: I've never heard of a simmental crossbred to Angus having offspring that are brockle-faced. It's likely a Hereford-only trait over any other breed that has a white face.

I have never heard that motley means 25% Herf, and that Simi crosses are never motley faced. How consistent is this?

There isn;t any specific percentage that will give a vrockle face versus a baldy face. Seems that some Hereford lines when crossed are more prone to throw baldys even when the percentage is small, others after the F1 stage they tend to be brockles. We used one Hereford bull, a 517 son, that threw baldys for 4 generations and 774 threw afew brockles as F1s. And Simmenthals are more of a crap shoot. Granny bred to the same baldy Simmenthal has had one brockle 2 baldys and one solid (no white at all).

I've never noticed it. But since except for 2 years ago when everything on the farm got pinkeye we hadn;t had any for 10 years so I never really paid much attention to eye pigmentation
