A friend worked for an Angus ranch. He said they single trait selected for low BW until they were pulling 60 pound calves out of cows with pelvic areas too small.
I want my cows to be able to have a 100 pound or larger calf. I just don't want that to be the average weight of those calves. I have a cow that as a first calf heifer birthed a 95 pound bull unassisted, bred back the night after I put the bull back in the pasture after two months, and had a second bull calf that weighed 92#. Her third calf went two weeks overdue, and weighed 107#. All these were unassisted. She weighs around 1200#. I am glad she is able to have them, but I don't want calves that heavy on a regular basis. I've also had calves as small as 55 pounds that weaned over 500.
