My son killed this bird Sunday afternoon shortly after the Hope Outdoors event. Deepsouth, and his friend Shane spent all day Saturday, and Sunday morning hunting with him. They took him under their wing, and showed him a lot of the basics (I'm not a hunter). I hunt in a very haphazard way relying on luck. Its not the best way to kill a turkey BTW. I told my son that I would abandon our usual approach, and start using the Mississippi boys approach. I cleaned an entire shelf out at wal-mart------mesh suit with leaves on it, gloves, face mask. My son called the way the guys showed him. We moved when he said move. About 90 minutes in this beast showed up. 30 pounds-----Bathroom scale i don't trust it myself. 12 inch beard. Good long spurs. I didn't know it was important to measure them, but I'm learning. These two gentleman made a very long lasting impression on my son. I will be forever grateful for the good roll model that they were to him.
 
Wow, what a bird. That's a bird of many lifetimes. I can see them hooks from here. Congrats to your son! That would be a trophy even if it was a jake, but that gobbler is amazing.

3way I can tell you he is a great kid, he doesn't meet a stranger. He has a great personality and a good sense of humor. I really enjoyed hunting with him this weekend. Shane and I may have taught him a few things but that boy is woods wise.
Bigfoot tell him that I killed one yesterday morning myself. I started to call him last night and tell him about it because when I shot the gobbler he flopped into a creek. He went under water and got Hung up under a bush with just one leg sticking up out of the water. I had to walk a less than solid looking log to get to him. Luckily I made it through the ordeal without getting wet. The turkey looked pretty rough. I know he would get a kick out of that. Here is a picture.

Sorry about the bad picture but my daddy isn't to good with a camera.
He's nothing like little foot's bird. I got a couple of chances to see that one he killed up close and personal and its the biggest gobbler I've ever seen, I'm glad he got him.
 
I will more than likely never kill a turkey myself. I will admit that the experience of seeing the turkey come in etc. was very addicting. Also not being in a blind compounded the excitement. Even though my face was covered I was afraid to blink. He set his gun up on him while he had his back to us. I usually admire the turkeys from my truck or 4 wheeler. This was the first turkey that I had been near in a full strut. They make a sound that is unmistakable now that I have heard it. At first I thought someone was behind us trying to get our attention.
 
He will get a kick out of that. Congrats on harvesting the first amphibious turkey.

Usually you hear that ''spit&drum'' noise behind you when they circle around and sneak in from the direction you least suspect. I am very happy for your son on his successful adventure.

I love to watch turkeys but have little desire to kill one....

many years ago we had two wild hens who raised 23 poults and they would come up to my house nearly every day as they worked the cattle pastures around the house....we watched them all summer....

Unfortunately, I'm not getting it mounted. It just looked like a normal turkey to me. I cut the fan, and beard off. I gave the carcass to a neighbor, with the feet on it. Luckily he had the forethought to save them for my son. I haven't gone to get them yet.
