Auctionmana should be aware that in the summer of 2007 a worker cleaning Milwaukee's sewage pipes, accidentally came across a strange smelling oily substance and realized it was PCBs. Further investigation showed that PCBs in superfund level quantities had contaminated the biosolids which had been spread on dozens of playgrounds and parks. The parks had to be closed so this hazardous waste could be removed and trucked, at great cost, to out of state hazardous waste landfills. No one knows whether any of this toxic material was also used in Milorganite already packaged and shipped to stores, since the incident was not reported until a month after it happened.
Sewage pipes are cleaned frequently. Yet PCBs in biosolids are not required to be tested by EPA. So we don't really know whether or not the biosolids composts we spread on pastures contain PCBs or the thousands of other unregulated and unmonitored industrial chemical compounds. With only 6 cows, why not use manure, clean compost, and rotate your pasture with legumes ( which fix nitrogen) rather than risk contaminating your land with biosolids?

Dun,

Some do burn it, but the cost of the energy to dry it and keep it burning far exceeds the value of the electricity produced.
Burning is simply not cost effective and then you also have the air pollution problem ( clean air act ) to deal with.

Looks to me like there could be some way to compost it and let it sit.....you know how compost goes from a great big pile to almost nothing when its finished composting.

That brings back some really bad 'nasal memories' dun. When they would "burn the *****ers", the smell filled the whole area and that air smelled like a giant beer and black bean flatulence--not to mention a tall black smoke plume that was a perfect target indicator for nva mortarmen.

Just an observation-----with out the use of genetically modified organisms, pesticides, insectacides, and chemical fertilizer we would not be able to feed the worlds population already. With 1920's production methods, and technology we would all be starving to death. Perhaps treated waste, which must be dealt with anyway, keeps us all eating in the near future. If you have never visited a country were lack of food is an issue I suggest you try it. Hunger is a hard thing to look at.

Use it as a renewable form of energy. The technologies exist, are being used in Europe, and even in some areas of the US. Converting sludge, which has a high Btu value, to electricity, district heating, and fuel would truly be a "beneficial " use of this waste.

The health risks from spreading sludge on land are much more serious than disposing of this waste on farms and fields. In fact, the methane generated from land-filled sludge can be used as a clean and renewable source of energy,

Go to most any other country on earth and suggest using biosolids for fertilizer and the answer will be.... of course what else would you do with it.
 
The US regulations governing the land application of biosolids are more lenient than the rules of any other country. We permit toxic chemicals to accumulate in soils until the land is so poisoned, it can no longer produce crops. Other countries, that want to protect their soils for future generations, either do not permit the use of biosolids on farm land, or have much stricter rules.
Using sludge BTUs for non-fossil fuel, renewable electricity, heating, and cooling, is being done successfully and economically in major European cities. They use state-of-the-art gasification or fluidized bed technologies that are not like old fashioned incinerators. These facilities are efficient, cause almost no air pollution, do not smell, and are run in a closed system. Farm land is increasingly lost by erosion, development, and lately, climate change weather patterns. Land is a finite resource. Every acre should be preserved for feeding the world's hungry, not degraded with industrial waste.

EPA regulates all sewage sludge that is used or disposed through land application, surface disposal, incineration, or disposal in a municipal solid waste landfill.
Sewage sludge is defined as solid, semi-solid, or liquid untreated residue generated during the treatment of domestic sewage in a treatment facility.

When treated and processed, sewage sludge becomes nutrient-rich organic materials called biosolids which can be safely recycled and applied as fertilizer to sustainably improve and maintain productive soils and stimulate plant growth. Permits are issued to facilities treating domestic sewage.

I dont know enough to have a opion but when you say were more lenient than any other country i have to say your full bs. I assume you mean europe, i dont think they can teach us anything about farming. You cant even drink tap water there.

European Commission Environment Waste Sludge


The Sewage Sludge Directive 86/278/EEC seeks to encourage the use of sewage sludge in agriculture and to regulate its use in such a way as to prevent harmful effects on soil, vegetation, animals and man. To this end, it prohibits the use of untreated sludge on agricultural land unless it is injected or incorporated into the soil. Treated sludge is defined as having undergone "biological, chemical or heat treatment, long-term storage or any other appropriate process so as significantly to reduce its fermentability and the health hazards resulting from its use". To provide protection against potential health risks from residual pathogens, sludge must not be applied to soil in which fruit and vegetable crops are growing or grown, or less than ten months before fruit and vegetable crops are to be harvested. Grazing animals must not be allowed access to grassland or forage land less than three weeks after the application of sludge. The Directive also requires that sludge should be used in such a way that account is taken of the nutrient requirements of plants and that the quality of the soil and of the surface and groundwater is not impaired.

Scientists have confirmed Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a transmissible, infectious prion disease. (Jucker, M 2010, Soto, C. 2011, Prusiner, S. 2012) There are over 6 million AD patients in the US. The epidemic grows by a new victim every 68 seconds.

Other prion contaminated wastes discharged to sewers include rendering plants (which process remains of 2 million potentially BSE infected downer cows each year), slaughterhouses, embalmers and morticians, biocremation, taxidermists, butcher shops, veterinary and necropsy labs, hospitals, landfill leachates (where CWD infected and other carcasses are disposed),

In the July 3, 2010 issue of VETERINARY RECORD, Dr. Pedersen stated: “Finally, the disposal of sludge was considered to represent the greatest risk of spreading (prion) infectivity to other premises.”

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recently warned that plants can uptake infectious prions: “. . . there is a potential risk to humans via direct ingestion of the compost or of compost particles adhered to skin or plant material (e.g. carrots). All they do is regurgitate what they have been spoon-fed and never hold a conversation.
And they call and hide behind the word “ environmentalist “.

What is so funny about this .org is they are against The Clean Air act, against recycling, against reducing landfills and for creating more sites to be designated as a supper fund clean up site at a latter date.
Fact is, they are against everything true environmentalist promotes.
