Big calf update....

The other day I posted a picture of a bull calf born to one of the heifers that I bought already bred to an angus bull. I figured it to weigh about 100 pounds or so and the heifer had a hard time delivering it but she did a nice job and had it unassisted. Today while checking the others it was standing next to a heifer calf sired by my Balancer bull that was born a week ahead of him and she weighed between 75 and 80 pounds. I had her on a scale but it kept jumping around so I believe she would fall in between therebouts. You can see the contrast in size. I didn't weigh this rascal because by the time it quit raining he was too spunky and strong to catch.....and heavy. I talked to the guy I bought her from and he has had no problems so far on heifers from the same bull with all being around 70 to 80 pounds. He looked this heifers records and said her momma was an angus x shorthorn cow. I have heard that Shorthorns have bigger calves but I do not know for sure or how much of an influence it might have been on this calfs size.

Thanks LazyRanch. He is going to be a humdinger. He is already starting to give me that look like I owe him money or something. He will sneak up behind me and sniff my legs when I am not looking.

I had another heifer calf born early this morning. I'm running very heavy on heifers this year so far. I'm hoping the others will come through and even up the score with more bull calves.

Just for you LazyRanch. Here is a heifer calf just born on Saturday from my #59 cow. I watched her have it through binoculars while relaxing on my front porch. I walked down and snapped a pic while it was trying to get up.

I wish you had been able to weigh the bull calf, HOSS. A neighbor bought a "black" bull out of the pasture from a friend. They decided he weighed 725/750, agreed on a price, and hauled him to the feed store to weigh him: 925 lbs. They were very, very surprised. I don't think he had planned to pay quite so much for an unregistered bull calf. But he stuck to his agreement, bought him and took him home. After looking at him a couple of days in the corral, he decided he wanted another weight. So he brought him here to run him over our scales: 905. People seem to have more trouble estimating the weights on the black ones than the red ones. Over the years, I've seen lots of surprised folks when their calves actually go over our scales; both too heavy and too light. But whatever this pair weighs, they're a good looking pair. Do you know the sire of the Angus calf?

The sire is a Bon View Bando 1394 son. He has a BW of +3 and a CED of +5. I don't know his reg #. The heifer that he was born to is a BR\Destination 727-928 daughter from a commercial angus x shorthorn cow.

One of my simm-herf cows had a fine hereford colored heifer calf the other morning in the WETTEST MUDDIEST spot in the pasture she could find. She was pretty chilled when my husband brought her in and I was worried about her for a couple of days but she's kickin' up her heels pretty crazy now so she got kicked out with the rest of the cows/calves.
