Better late......

....than never. Due to a train wreck during breeding season last year, we are calving way late. Calves are Angus sired, cows are Tarentaise.
Hubby called me on the way home from work, I was only 10 miles out. He had just seen the feet. By the time I got home the calf was delivered and on its feet.

Terrible angle on the photo, this is actually a well put together little cow.

This one came quick and easy, too, and also was quick to get up and suck.

A fat little cow with some butt.

Hopefully a couple more will come before the long weekend is over. I like to watch and make sure they get started OK.....

You're right about that, better late than never. That makes for a nice cross.

Congratulations on your new calf! My Tarentaise, Tazzie, had an Angus calf last year and I was very impressed with the cross. He had a black coat with brown streaks and I almost wish I could have his hide made into a rug.

This year we had a purebred Tarentaise - I was wanting a purebred heifer, as the sire was polled. The calf came out polled, but he was the wrong sex - but he's a great looking steer anyway. We ended up buying a nice heifer by the same polled sire, but she was horned.

I'm surprized you can get that close to your cow at birth. Tazzie likes to calve in a stand of bamboo, and she has this deep little "mah" which means that you better step away slowly. I usually can't get very close for a couple of days, although the rest of the year she is quite gentle.

All our Tar cows so far are very tolerant of us messing with their calves. We often get weights and check the sex while they are still wet. That doesn't mean we aren't careful, complacency will get you hurt.

It doesn't mean they aren't protective, either. Any canines better look out. Cows will come up to the fence and shake their heads at our dogs. Last year we raised some pigs in a pen next to the corral and some of the cows wanted to take them out. We had one new mother charge a group of chickens who were scratching too close to her new calf. THAT was funny. Squaaaaak! and the feathers flew, they got out of her way so fast.
