So I’ve been looking at what to use for Ai this year. I got my feet wet last year, I want to give it another go. Ai’d 8 last year, lost 1 cow to anaplaz, got 3 of the 7. Used red angus semen from Mushrush ranches bull Icon. All were black bull calves, we were going for replacement heifers. Lol
So anyway talking with guy I buy bulls from. I mentioned liking Bet On Red but his price is pretty steep(300-700/straw). He goes I’ll do one better, I’ve got 3 embryos of Bet On Red for $500each, guarantee 1 live calf. Or 10 straws of Bet On Red for $150/each. He bought them before he got crazy high.

Other bulls I’ve considered are Payroll, Hollywood 79H or one from Diamond C simmentals. Hollywood is a Mushrush ranches bull I really like and this young bull from Diamond C is pretty impressive just not proven yet.

What are your goals for the calves? Are you wanting to get red heifers? Bet On Red is popular with the show crowd. By epd's, he is a lower growth bull with Stayability (longevity) in the bottom 1% of the breed. I think his appeal is a fancy show "look". I have heard that he is small frame. But I have never used him. My goals for simmental are maternal with better than average growth and easy keepers. All the semen I use is in the double digit range, none of those triple digit prices.

If you are hoping for red replacement heifers, you will only get black/rusty colored calves if you are breeding to black cows without a red gene in their genetics. I would never spend $300-$700 for a straw of semen. I have not personally looked at his EPDs but if he is for show cattle offspring, he probably is not a good sire for replacement heifers. I suggest talking to your AI tech about what your goals are and let him/her give you suggestions on sire selections.

Not nearly as many red ai bulls available as black ones. In addition to the 3 major AI studs, look at Allied Genetic Resources. They have an online bull semen catalog, mostly black but a fair number of red simmental and simangus to choose from. These are bulls owned by the breeder members of the AGR group.

Triple digits for semen semen should probably be used with IVF, and a near perfect female, to get a sexed embryo. At $300-700 a straw it's too easy to end up with a +$1000 steer, or nothing at all.

All very good points. No show cattle here, I actually don’t care for the show world even though I grew up showing steers/pigs. I think I got blinded by the idea of expensive stuff I normally can’t afford at a discount. Normally I stay with 25-30/straw stuff.
I’d like rwf heifers but I’m just now getting my red angus heifers to Ai time. I use natural service first time and hopefully growth and maturity will help them settle to Ai on second calf.

Agree with everyone on the Bet on Red bull. Mainly for show and not much else. I like the Rockin H Captivate J75 Red Simmental Bull.
I really like his looks and his Loverboy genetics but I’m making heifers I have to consider his maternal EPDs. He does well until his Stay is 12.9. His milk is 40something so I have to think cows that milk that heavy have issues breeding back on time. These other 2 I posted are more balanced and still have the looks. On the carcass side he lacks in ribeye and marbling but not my biggest worry for heifers making.
