best way to dehorn

I'd ask GlacierRidge in a few months.. .Banding them with an XL bander sounds like the 'nicest' way. You have serious risks with sawing them off.. blood loss, infection, etc.

Well this has been beat to death my friend but this is how I do it - despite hoots of derision from the "its only an animal crowd".

I get lidocaine from the veterinarian.

I squeeze her/him up

Inject the lidocaine.

I then take my wire saw and cut them off.

I then burn the area around the horn with my burner.

Then I spray it with "Bleu" which is blue and antiseptic and forms a crust over the horn.

I then turn them out.

They feel nothing and they do not bleed bad and they heal fast and there - to date - has never been any after effects.

That is it in a nutshell.

Chainsaws, sawzalls, circular saws and such? Just plays into the hands of the animal rights folks.

That is what I would if they were mine
I dehorn small ones I am keeping but if I buy cattle with horns I only tip them

Yeah had the first old cow lose her horns already... Hers were just so small enough for the green bands... Took about 2 months to come off with the tiny bands, and they were banana sized horns.
She looks real good without them and had a calf since too :)

Much easier on them than burning or cutting.

Use a chute, halter and noselead tho, you'll be glad you did.
They still like to move about.
