I'm going to AI some of my registered Angus cows to a Hereford bull in hopes of getting some good F1 cross cows. What Hereford bull in your opinion is the best on the market today? Looking for a bull that will sire females with good udders, feet, and phenotype. I don't want to give up alot on the growth side either but the maternal traits is what I'm primarily worried about. I'm good with both a polled and horned bull.

3027 would be my pic

If you are going to buy from one of the large semen companies, I would agree with 3027!

And Harland would would be a close second choice for me!

Both are good maternal bulls who sire productive females.

They look like good choices.
Who would you recommend IF you had to choose a Polled Hereford?

Here is a young bull that I am keeping an eye on and probably going to try out. Out of a good dam and a breed leading epd type of sire...but totally unproven so far...

Personally I've had good luck with THM Durango 4037 cattle. Very good depth and thickness.

WHat were the Durangos like for size? Are they really that small?

I haven't kept up much the last couple of years, I have quit AIing and use live cover on the best bull I can afford.

I have used 3027 and like him, easy calving and good calves, I like Harland but never got anything that rang my bell. I have really liked the calves I have gotten from SHF Rib Eye but sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one that got the right nick with him, his BW is a concern if used wrong. One of the last years I AI'd I had a old cow that I thought I would try to get one last calf from, she really never gave anything to take second notice on. I just grabbed a straw, which happened to be SHF Progress, she dropped and weaned a heifer and I shipped her. That calf turned out to be my top cow, great udder, easy calving, breeds back, easy keeper and good gain on her calves....... Wish I had tried more of him. I like Legend very well also.

I like this bull a lot. B&G

For a good polled Hereford you might want to look at TH 122 711 Victor 719T

http://genex.crinet.com/beef/index.php? ... e=1HP00829

We've never used 719T but the neighbors with black crossbreds down the road have and I guess they weren't impressed enough to keep using him and actually offered to give us the rest of the semen they had on him so we did some more research on him before declining. The Hereford breeders I have discussed him with have had mixed feedback on him, the guys looking at feedlot and carcass traits say he's poor in that area and the cow/calf producers say he's good on calving ease and make decent cows but he's really marginal on frame size and growth. His performance pedigree shows 220 progeny with an average of 5.3 frame so depending on what you are looking for he could be OK or he could be a disappointment is the general consensus I get from talking with breeders that have used him. Genex has him listed as a 6.3 frame for yearling and 6.0 mature frame so if his progeny are averaging a 5.3 frame that is a little concerning.

Revolution definitely is a cow maker. He too is going to possibly give you some more moderate framed females as he has 759 progeny recorded at an average frame of 5.6. We've used him on a variety of different types of cows and have been getting middle to lower 5 yearling frame for his females but they have made very solid cows with nice tight udders with plenty of milk. Our bull calves out of him we've had frame as high as 7 to as low as 5.5 but all usually have been pretty growthy bulls with some good muscling.

Just depends on where you prefer to get your semen from but I think Rausch Herefords has a pretty solid lineup of both Polled and Horned bulls you can get semen on: http://www.rauschherefords.com/sires.html Their program has the most Dam of Distinctions in the Hereford breed so you know they aren't ignoring the maternal traits in their program. For Polled bulls we've been using Hyalite On Target 936 and SHF YORK 19H Y02 including keeping a 936 son that we used this summer and will get our first calves out of in 2016.

My Durangos cows are 5.6 to 6.0 frame cows. They are docile and milk well. They have a bit larger teat size than ideal. I've never assisted one calving...

I guess I missed this post originally. First off Feltons Legend 242 is the sire of Revolution 4R, I'd just use Revolution if you were going that route. The 2nd bull you linked is Logic who we used a couple years AI and still have 2 daughters sired by him. They have been pretty good cows for us, good milkers for sure. Lot of good maternal traits either way you go there I think, Revolution daughters especially have been proving themselves as good cows in many herds across the country.

I figured the 242 semen would be cheaper, plus I have no experience with revolution. I know I do not like the revolution picture of him when he was young. I have a few polled projects that I have kept and I can say that the 242 daughters are good. I currently don't have plans on using him again but you never know.

Please refer to MrVictorDomino post on his fall 2015 herd sires. I think he is going to draw the 035 bull. I would be checking that out seriously if I had black cows to breed. My 2 cents...

Yea he would be a good one. I have no plans on using a polled bull other than my own for awhile. I may have to later. I am pursuing the Horned line although my polled females do a good job dehorning by themselves . I am trying to stay focused and not get all excited about another bull. LOL.

I have a couple Revolution granddaughters in production and they are some of my best mama's. If you can't find Revolution though, Legend is a good economic option that has been proven. Those are my picks. Anyone have any opinion on Mr. Maternal? He came to mind when I read this thread.

Mr. Maternal is an awesome looking animal. I would love to see how he crossed with my gerts.
