Beginners Lessons Learned

Things I have learned in a few short months on this board!

· Do not let your dog run wild, no matter how sweet he is.

· SSS Shoot Shovel Shut up in regards neighbors dogs

· Petting Cows can be dangerous, they can hurt you at any time

· Do not post a picture of your animal and ask opinions unless it is really good, or you have thick skin

· Brahman cattle have a purpose besides just for rodeo's

· Murrey Grey is a breed and most likely the best breed there is

· Angus breeders are disliked by some people even though they do not know them

· Importance of infrastructure

· Learn before you buy cattle, not after you get them

· Different breeds work better in different parts of the country

· Shoot downed animals, more humane and time affective

· Watch all cost, just because things are good now wont always be that way.

· Cows need hay, water and mineral and very little feed if any.

· EPD's are only way to buy cattle

· EPD's can not be trusted in buying cattle

· Never turn back on bull no matter how gentle they are

· Sale Barns are bad place to buy cattle!

· Sale Barns are good place to buy cattle!

I am sure there is lots more I am missing!

Maybe you could apply for Director of Agricultural Intelligence - you've been able to get a pretty good handle on this stuff, quickly.

The things I have learned from Crowder would fill a whole other thread, and lots might not be appropriate to post here :D tried to keep it cattle oriented.

Well did you dive in the deep end first or wade where you could see bottom. I also hope you didn't just jump in a car without some instuction. Most Homo Sapiens have to crawl then walk before swiming and driving. You were learning a long time before you took the first step in any of the aboved mentioned endeavors.

The most valuable lesson ive ever learned with my cattle is the value of good hay and having enough of it.

You NEVER have too much good hay.

Your cattle are as good as their nutrition and no ammount of breeding or money will make up for poor quality hay, minerals, and water.

To add to Caustics, illustrations above. What I have learned is that you need to have some basic knowledge of the important areas of raising cattle before you go buy them. Like nutrition and health management. I learned some things the hard way, I actually bought my first heifer before I ever closed on my farm kept it at friends house for a month. I had some knowledge from when I was a kid and a teen when I worked for a ranch. But I wish I would have found a site like this before I ever bought that crazy limi.

remember it really only matters how you feel -- lots of people make different angles work.. ignorance is not okay and common sense pays off alot.

I hate and love haying...when everything works good and the weather cooperates i love it...you know the rest...hoping for a great year...we need one. donna

Thought that there are no dumb questions...only ones that wern't well thought out before asking...
Suppose the list would fill a couple of posts.

Probably the most honest question that I can remember came from my grand daughter when she asked "Grandpa, when will the calf's top teeth come in?". From her it was honest curiosity, posted on the board it could be the source of alot of laughs and advise on doing one's homework. All in the presentation. DMc
