Beefmaster calves. Opinions please. I'm not as happy with this years calves as in the past, cows had a really dry winter and low quality hay. Bad management; my bad.

I'm hoping they will catch up as soon as the grass comes on.
 
Birdog - they look fine to me. I don't really start developing opinions of my calves until they are older and start filling out some. Well, I take that back... I guess I do start developing opinions of their dispositions and vigor pretty quick. Seems like the really good ones hit the ground going strong and stay that way. I've had a couple that seemed dumb as dirt from the git-go and kinda stayed clumbsy and less vigorous until they were gone. But as far as physical traits, I've had calves that looked small and hollow at 3 or 4 weeks take off and outgrow the bigger ones. Your calves look like fine beefmasters to me. Congrats.
 
those are some goodlooking beefmaster calves.give them time to fill out.i think they look real good now.so id say you have a good calf crop.i have a beefmaster calf i dont like the looks of.an he will be culled at weaning.

Thanks for all the replies. I was comparing their bone mass and birth weights to last years calves and they seem a little finer boned and a few pounds lighter. I am planning on giving them time to grow out and see how they do. Can they catch up on their lack of bone or will they always be lighter on the bone? Never have really compared in the past. Looking for higher quality hay for this year. Getting harder to find with fertilizer prices like they are.
