We have another apple eating bear hanging out. Not the same bear as last year. This one is black the last year bear was cinnamon. The wife and son got a good look at this one last night. It was after dark. They shined a big bright flashlight on it and it climbed the apple tree. This one is also a sow but with only one cub. The apple trees don't have as many apples as last year so hopefully she doesn't hang around too long.
This doesn't look to me like the kind of country with a lot of bears but there isn't a shortage of them. I don't think of open sage brush landscape to be bear habitat. I guess that is because I have use to seeing them in the forests of western Washington and SE Alaska.

It seems they will thrive wherever they find food. No food, they leave. But a large part of their diet is grass until they can find better things.

A couple of the piles left in the yard are juniper berries. Lots of them this time of the year up on the hills.

Tonight there are 3 different bears which you can see from our back porch. Maybe 20-30 yards away. And there was noise that sounded like a fourth bear. My son took pictures of them. If they turn out I will post some.

The wife cleaning up bear crap in the yard. Saturday morning there was 20 piles. The bear needs o do a better job of chewing its food. The apples seem to go right through.

I know its a job but rather than clean up bear scat why not throw all the apples out into the field.

That has been done. The bears climb the tree and knock down more apples. Also there is a couple of plum trees which have small plums about the size of a walnut. The bear has taken a liking to them.

From looking at the scat I would say it all goes down and they need to do a better job of chewing.

They eat anything thats included in the fruit. We find piles of poop 6" tall that looks like almost nothing but seed.

At our old place we had a bunch of native plums in the windbreak row. There was a fox or two would eat plums and then if a turned over feed pan or anything was out in the pens, the fox would crap right on top of it. Plum pits and all.

Son sent me a couple pictures he took while here. Picture taken off our deck. The bear is maybe 40 yards away. It is 22 paces to those lilac bushes on the lower side of the picture. There is a 12-15 foot wide irrigation ditch just the other side of the Lilacs. I believe that is the same bear that was here last year. This was the only time we saw her this year.

No that is a cinnamon colored black bear. Not all black bears are black. They come in a lot of different colors. It is a long ways from here to any grizzly.

Although black is the most common color for black bears. There are some white ones on the Queen Charlotte Islands along the BC coast. Farther north in SE Alaska the a blue colored phase of them call Glacier Bears. I have seen lot of combinations of brown and black, like a black body with brown legs. Or the other way around a brown body with black legs. Saw a sow up here a couple years ago who was darn near yellow and she had 2 black cubs.

I saw this mentioned and thought it was interesting. Evidently Japan is having issues with bear attacks, and they are bringing in troops to help. They need @kenny thomas and his bear hunting group to go over there and help them out.

They should just nuke em (the bears) and problem solved.. ..(Too Soon?)
