Bear attack.

I would believe it. Healthy bears have been all but non existent the last 2 years. They cut the number of days you could harvest bears down to I think 10 this year. First month is basically chase season.
After i wrote that i looked up info on the bear from the Virginia Game Commission. They state it has had no impact on the numbers. You definitely know better than that.

Only time I've had black bear trouble was a night of drinking in collage and a buddy chasing two cubs up a tree. Wouldn't recommend it.

There's a restaurant here that feeds the bears all their food scraps. So when you go have dinner you can watch the bears eating.

Up until a few years ago there was an ice cream shop that had a chainlink fence that you could hold onto your ice cream cone while the wild bears on the other side ate it. The fence was just an open ended section with nothing to keep the bears from coming around it. Ha

Around here feeding bears would be a no no. It would probably get you in hot water with the law.
The reasoning behind it is that if bears become accustomed to associating people with food they would lose their fear and could become aggressive.

That's why the ice cream shop shut down, fear somebody would get attacked. But they operated for something like 50? Years.

As for the restaurant they get away with it. It's no secret in fact that is their tourist trap advertising "come eat and watch the bears". Mediocre food but it's fun to watch the bears. Ha

Back in the 1970s and maybe into the 80s Wyoming issued a black bear tag along with a general elk tag. I think we didn't have near as many black bears back then, but I don't think very many were harvested either.

Thats the problem here. We tree a lot of bear but might kill 20% or less. When you kill one the work just begins. First you have to call it in plus pull a tooth and send it in. Then cleaning it is a job. And almost no one wants the meat. Only way i would kill one would be if it was hurting a person or a dog. As i have said before a dog or a few dogs get hurt each year. Occasionally a dog gets killed.

Yep, out of probably 25 or so that I have been in contact with the last 2 years I think 3 have been healthy. If it didn’t affect numbers why change the season?

Ed Wiseman was that guide that killed the Grizzly September of 1979 South of Pagosa Springs Colorado. He Lives in Iowa now according to the internet. And did work at Walmart when he was still working.

He had to pass a lie detector test to be cleared of killing the bear a 20 year old sow Grizzly. Grizzlies were considered a protected species in Colorado when that happened even though it was I guess a surprise there were any still left when he killed it.

And he saw it charging him from 30 yards and had used the arrow to fight and kill it with. He is in his 80’s now and has had books written about his encounter with that 400 lb Grizzly. Was said that if the bear hadn’t of been as old as it was and him still a young strong man. The bear might have killed him.

Are bears any good to eat ? I ate some chili that was pretty good that I was told was made of bear burger. Was shown a package of it in a freezer bag and was a very dark color meat.

One of the better roasts I've had was black bear. I hear it matters when it's killed and what it eats. In the fall they are better than in the spring.

Also, if you stew the feet they look like human hands enough to turn some people off.

Its all according to what its eating and how its fixed. Its very fatty by early winter. I have had it that was good and that was terrible.

I had some that was very good... was told the trick to cooking it was to cook it up on a rack so the fat drained off the meat... unlike a beef roast where the roast is in the juice and fat renderings, the bear fat is supposed to give it an "off taste"...
I am sure that what it has been eating is also a big contributor...

Same with goose.... should cook it up on a rack in the roasting pan so the fat/grease falls below and it does not sit in the fat.

That would make sense. I loved to duck hunt and have tried eating them Cooked several different ways but have yet to ate any that I could stomach.

Had a friend who I was coon hunting with one night tell me how great coon was to eat. I found out after spitting that one small bite out of my mouth faster than it went in my mouth. He was badly mistaking. That was the nastiest tasting thing I had ever tasted.

@504RP .....Cooked a goose for Christmas dinner for my new in laws of 3 months...many many years ago.. first time ever to cook a goose... I must have been crazy.... but a friend told me to cook it up on a rack so the grease dripped down into the pan and didn't stay in/on the meat...
It was DELICIOUS.....and they were wonderful in laws... too bad my ex wasn't as wonderful as his parents...

Good friends here in Va... the son bear hunted with a bunch of guys... got a nice bear... cooked the roast and asked me if I would like to try some.... I had heard they were gamey/rank... but it was very good... again.. cooked up on a rack so the grease dripped below.
Never ate coon.... hate them with a passion because of the destruction they cause in our chickens..... that I am sure I would be prejudiced and just hate the taste on general principles...

When I was about 10 years old. Me and three of my friends that I caught the school bus with had found 2 or 3 steel traps hanging in their grand pa’s shed.

Set them out under an opening of this old barn floor where something had been going in and out of. Caught a big bore opossum the first morning we ran it while waiting on the school bus. It was in the winter and would stay somewhat cool up until almost noon but warm up later in the afternoon.

So when we would get out of school we would skin our old opossum and stretch its hide on a board and that was the first of many getting rich schemes I have tried in my 64 years of living. Think we were getting almost $ 2 a peace for a big opossum hide !!! 😉

Well in just a little over a week we had caught and skinned 3 maybe 4 opossums. And while we were skinning one of them. My buddies Aunt and uncle pulled up and saw what we were doing. And inquired as to what we were doing. Their aunt being the robust country girl she is was happier than a pig in the mud to have found out what a delicacy we had came by and was more than happy to educate us on what we unknowingly had in our possession and at just how delicious opossum meat was to dine on !!! And wanted to kick our opossum meat business off by purchasing everyone we could bring here dressed at $ 2 per opossum !!!! Chi, Ching !!! Chi Ching !!! 😉

So with that opossum we gladly finished cleaning to send home with Mrs Marry and her husband to dine on for that nights dinner and with the exception of having to dis embowel, dehead, and cut the feet and tail off and of course wash the carcass up with water. All & All me & my business partners felt like between the $ 2 cash on the barrel head we made from Mrs Martin for the opossum and the $ 2 we would hopefully get for the hide were well on our way to becoming rich lads.

PLUS we had about 4 more opossums in our inventory that all we had to do was finish dressing and delivering them to miss Mary !!! 😉 Which we jumped onto getting done like a duck taking care of a June bug !!! 😁

But now I don’t know how many of you have ever been in the business of selling opossum meat and those of you that haven’t are aware of just how difficult it it is to finish cleaning parsley dressed opossums that have been laying in the pasture for 4 or 5 days even it was only getting in the low 70 degrees for a daily high.

😉 Well let’s just say it’s more trouble than it’s worth and leave it at that. So much trouble that it put us out of business and the hardest $ 10 we ever earned. So that’s one of the reasons I am not a millionaire today !!! 😁 Just couldn’t hack it in big business!!! 😁

I can understand that. But if you were ever to and try a taste of coon you would hate the taste of it alone just because it taste terrible regardless of your principals.

That night my friends Mother had cooked that just so that I could try it. I could not hide the fact as how bad I thought it was. It was pretty obvious when I almost barfed it up when I took my first bite. And I apologized to his Mother and other family members that were there eating dinner and Lucky for me they all thought it was funny and it didn’t offend none of them nor ruin their appetite. There wasn’t a morsel one left of that coon except what was on my plate. Maybe coon is an acquired taste ? But it’s something I could not ever acquire a taste for.

That goes the same for duck and doves. I have killed hundreds of ducks, geese and doves and have never been able to eat any of those birds. I Loved hunting them but have no desire hunting them or any other type of game that I won’t eat myself. Unless I am hunting with people who will eat them. Then I would be more than happy to give what birds I kill to them. I was younger when I killed all of the waterfowl and doves that I did.

And I would enjoy hunting them now. There’s nothing more exciting and enjoyable than hunting water fowl out of a good duck blind in 30 degree and below sleeting rain and snow mix weather.
