All this with bears is got me to thinking I had a lot closer call than I thought I had a few years ago down in the field at a garden plot.
I had several experiences, with bears in the area but one in particular could have been bad.
I went down one evening, this is probably about a half mile from the house to a garden plot to pick some Roma II beans.
I have to get down and crawl around picking beans because if I stoop or bend over to pick I get dizzy and headaches, so I sacrifice my knees to avoid that.
About 250 ft rows, and I was on the outside row next to a grown up fence row. Trees along the fence row then honeysuckle bushes in front of those and it makes for several feet of complete cover, especially since I hadn’t had cattle grazing that field for a few years.
That was when I could still hear somewhat decent. I started picking and heard something crack some branches in the distance probably around the other end of the row in the bushes.
It went again after a few minutes I could tell it was coming towards me. Every once in a while I’d hear some small branches break like something big walking on the underbrush. I thought it’s probably a bear. And I foolishly thought well every thing I’m told about the black bears is that thee will run from you.
I’d seen bear activity down there and seemed like they would always stay hid or run away pretty fast. So I kept on crawling around picking beans. I’d stop and try to listen when I’d hear movement.
I was getting a little unnerved when I realized it was getting very close.
I couldn’t see anything for the dense undergrowth, and I was figuring it had gotten within 20-30 feet of me and I hadn’t heard any movement for what seemed like a while probably a just a minute or two. Then all of a sudden right behind me I heard a short growl, low and gutteral. I was down on the ground and I just froze. I didn’t look around just flat out froze in place for quite a while, never heard anything else or any movement. After a while I got up and backed away with my pan of beans to the truck.
I read something later that said basically to do the exact opposite of what I did when encountering a black bear. It said to make noise and make yourself appear bigger and there I’d been hunkered down and motionless.
