It's about time they make a movie and give credit where it's due. Rooster Cogburn was a fictional character. Bass Reeves was the real deal, serving as the first black federal marshal west of the Mississippi. He served the western district of Arkansas and the adjacent Indian Territory along with the 'Hangin' Judge" Issac Parker. Same time period and geographic area that Rooster served in True Grit.

You need to see the movie "The Harder They Fall". Fictional western, but all characters are based on real Black cowboys, gunslingers, bad guys and good guys from that era. Bass Reeves was the Marshall in the movie. Good flick, a little bloody in a Quentin Tarantino vibe, but really good storyline.
