I'm putting in some new barbed wire fencing, and I had a question about something. Should the clips that go on the posts be tight? I'm sure it's an elementary thing, but I've always twisted them until they held the wire tight. But I saw a video about fencing yesterday where the guy put the clip on, with the point on the open end facing up, he twisted the longer end about 3/4 of a twist, then he simply hit the other open end with a hammer. I did that yesterday, and the clips rarely got where the wire couldn't be moved up and down (and maybe I just wasn't hitting them hard enough). So, which is right? Clip twisted super tight, that doesn't allow any movement of the wire? Or just snug?

Twist the clips tight enough to prevent them from coming off and prevent vertical movement over studs on t-posts, but still allow the wire to flow through the clips horizontally. This allows the stress of an unwanted force to be spread out along the whole span of wire instead of the distance between posts, hopefully springing back to the same length instead of stretching.

Channellock 85's are the best I've found for an all around fencing plier, and does the above well.

Same principle with wooden posts, leave the staple loose enough to allow the wire to flow through. The only place I want my wire fastened tight to the posts is on the end posts.
 
Best thing I ever used to put on clips is, a piece of steel brake line cut to about 8 inches long. Works like a charm.
 
When you shake the post the clips should not wiggle around. But they don't need to be overly tight.

Put the pliers up. We use a tool that is made commercial. But it's not much better than a piece of brake line.
 
So I understand the logic behind the brake line, but do you do anything to tighten the other end of the clip?
Also, I’ve seen those commercial tools that work like the brake line does, but that’s pretty much what I’m doing with the fence pliers. Just making a half twist.

Broken tooth from a wheel rake works well, too. The end that is secured under the clamp/bolt, trim to about 6" overall length.

I lose my mind when I come on a brace post that has been stapled at all where the wire wraps around :lol2:
