Any tips for making cow feed? I have seen folks direct bale, rake/then bale, chop/rake/then bale...

we cut rake and bale the same as we do for hay
we have cut them with a flail mower,a moco and also a disc mower
I like them cut with the disc mower or moco best
on cutting them with a moco we release the pressure on the rolls so it doesn't shatter what corn is left on the stalk

Flail shredder, rake and then bale. Flail shredder provides the best feed with the least amount of waste by the cattle.

I rolled some corn stalks a few years ago, we bushhogged it with a batwing then raked and baled. The biggest difficulty we had was moving them, we just about had to use forks under it to move them. maybe we didn't use enough string. I would say use a lot of string or netwrapping would be better. And also with the waste you will have, you can compost it and recycle it onto your ground.
Same for us. we just brushhogged and raked. It can be a pain in the arse to rake if the field has been cultivated though. I agree with the string too, we had to start and finish the string quite a bit from the outside of the bale, make several turns and then finish it out.

Depending upon the combine that was used, as much as 50% to as little as 15%. The longer the stalk the more they waste.

Make sure thy're good and dry before baling, otherwise you'll wind up with moldy bales. I cut stalks 1 year w/a moco and waited about a week where we happened to have perfect drying weather. Apparently it wasn't drying enough though as I had moldy bales. If you have a soft core baler it would be better. Mine was a hard core and I think that contributed my mold issue- bales couldn't breath.
Could you maybe get soybean straw instead? That's what I feed and I think it works better than corn stalks.
