Sorry to post this here but I don't know how to IM or post on this forum. This is a question for Dave in Baker County Oregon - Have you heard anything about some sort of Petition 28 trying to get a new law on the voting schedule? If you read through petition the law if passed would make hunting, fishing, breeding of animals, butchering, raising livestock for food, ranching, livestock shows, rodeos, etc. all illegal. While I can see some crazy Peta members in Portland thinking this would be good, I can't believe that the majority of Oregon would want it. Heavily populated areas of the west coast states have gotten very strange in the past years though, so?

This is the Initiative Petiton 28 (PEACE) wording:
Initiative Petition 28, titled People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions (PEACE) Act is a ballot initiative filed for the 2026 Oregon general election. For those hearing about IP28 for the first time, this ballot initiative would remove many of the current exemptions from Oregon’s animal cruelty laws against animal abuse, animal neglect, and animal sexual assault. These statutes prohibit the intentional injury or killing of an animal (abuse), the withholding of care from an animal or the injurious tethering of an animal (neglect), and the sexual contact of an animal’s mouth, anus, or genitals (sexual assault), but many animals are not currently protected under these laws due to the numerous exemptions included.

By removing exemptions from these laws, animals that were not previously protected from abuse, neglect, and sexual assault would finally receive legal protections. As one might realize, this would impact many industries that currently involve animals. Animals on farms, research labs, exhibitions, and in the wild, would no longer be allowed to be intentionally injured or killed (abused), nor would they be allowed to be forcibly impregnated (sexually assaulted). Animals in transport trucks, or in the industries already mentioned, could no longer be deprived of adequate food, water, and shelter (neglected) either. Importantly, all veterinary practices and the use of self-defense would remain exempt from these statutes.

IP28 prohibits any activity—other than self-defense and veterinary practices—that intentionally injures, kills, or sexually violates an animal, many of which are currently legal because they are exempt from our animal cruelty laws. You can read a summary of the initiative's impact created by the Attorney General here. The reason we are seeking to prohibit these activities is not to be punitive towards anyone currently involved with the injuring, killing, or breeding of animals, but rather to be protective of the needs of the animals and to codify their right to life and bodily autonomy in law. There are many alternative ways that all of us can meet our needs without relying on the abuse, neglect, and sexual assault of animals—and we hope that this campaign helps push us towards that more peaceful future.

In order to help support the transition to alternatives that do not rely on injuring and killing animals, IP28 also establishes a Humane Transition Fund to provide grants helping with food assistance, replacement of lost income, job retraining, and aid in conservation and rewilding efforts. The Humane Transition Fund will be administered by a council consisting of representatives from the Oregon Department of Agriculture, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Office of Tribal Affairs, Oregon Department of Human Services, among other community members who would be impacted by the implementation of IP28. If someone wants to post this on it's own thread, please feel free to do so. I thought this was a scam or joke until I looked it up and saw it was going on the general election ballot in 2026.

There has been talk about this for awhile... have they got the required number of signatures to get it on the ballot , finally???
Sounds like the Proposal several years ago in Colorado, and it was soundly voted down... But as ensuing generations of people get more and more distanced from "real life" and farming; and they get to eating more of this fake manufactured meat... things like this are going to get more worriesome.

Yes they got the signatures. I firmly believe it will go down in flames unless the entire state goes vegan before election day. Eliminate hunting, fishing, and animal agriculture in the state has zero chance of passing. I worry more when they get measures which take a small bite out of things. And a few years later taking another small bite.

They got the signatures, but I heard they were deceptive in doing so. A friend of mine raises Hereford cattle and has hired a women to help out on occasion. That women mentioned she had signed the petition and was attempting to talk my friend into doing the same. When my friend asked her why in the world she would sign something like that, she said it was because she was told it was a petition to ensure people with livestock or pets made sure those animals had enough water and proper nutrition. They said nothing about the extreme measures the law would enforce.

I heard that the petitioner intends to keep putting this on the voting schedule every year until it passes and then he will move on to other states.

Sounds par for the course, so much of those extreme animal rights propaganda and other things as well, use deceptive wording to gain support. Unfortunately, it may just be a matter of time before craziness like that gain a foothold. As people become further removed away from agriculture and common sense knowledge of how and why things are done then the propaganda machines are going to gain more and more momentum on college campuses and elsewhere

It's funny the topic of being further removed from agriculture comes up. When I was walking that heifer down main street USA I was completely shocked at the amount of kids who had no idea what it was I was walking on a halter. Had several ask me what kind of horse it was!!

And the amount of people telling me, u ain't gonna eat her are u??

I didn’t know whether to use a laughing or crying emoji about that.
I can believe it. We’ve been in several situations like having cows or a bull in a trailer and stopped off at restaurants and sometimes people will walk over and look in the trailer.
One time I’d bought some weaning age goats and had them in a goat gopher ( the official name of the wire panel pickup bed carrier once made by Tarter Gate company).
We came back through the big city of Lexington. Stopped at stoplights with bleating goats in the back of the truck got a lot of looks.

Some friends from church who live in town stopped by on Friday. I had the heifer I had just bought to butcher once she is fat in the corral. We were looking at it. The lady said, "once you get over the crying, it should be good eating." What crying?

The last one I turned into a cow was Seven. Haven't managed to keep another bottle calf long enough. Yet.......

Shes the wrong color for me. But then again so is Seven. We will see what happens.


But everything becomes something else's dinner eventually!

We were headed out camping and stopped by Walmart with Donk in the trailer. When we came out 5 or 6 people were standing there saying something has to be wrong with her. It sounds like she's dieing why does she make that noise? Well, because she's a donkey. I'd be more concerned if she started mooing!
