Found 3 cases of pinkeye this afternoon. 2 heifers in the early stage and bull with it pretty bad. Hopefully the treatment will improve things. Neighbor said he had about 15 cases. Anybody else seeing more problems this year? First we have had in 8-10 years and we vaccinate for it.

Flies will spread it. Your neighbor's 15 cases may be spilling over to you. I think the best thing you can do is to really control face flies. jmho. Jim

Been bad for me. Fairly well on top of the flies, but the grass has grown out of control. Our first case was a 4 year old cow that had it before the flies kicked in or the grass got tall though. We've had an unusual number of older cows get it.
We had to treat 5 cases week before last. I've been busy with hay and didn't keep watch over the cows very good. Wife found them, a couple were fairly severe, one had it in both eyes bad - nice 2nd calf cow. We treated the ones that needed it and I poured the whole group with generic ivermectin while we had them up, haven't seen any since (knock on wood). The one cow is going to have an ulcer, think the rest we caught in time.

Tom, you should be able to save the bull's eye. Our Angus herd sire had it last year. I think he got from rubbing in the dirt pile. His lower eyelid had a cut on it. His eye started out cloudy with the white pimple in the middle. I ended up catching him up 3 times every other day and giving him 80cc of LA200 each time. I also squirted some under the eye lid. The last thing we did was put a patch over the eye to keep the sun and flies away. The first patch came off over night, but the second one stayed on for over a week. His eye cleared up and he still was able to breed the cows. It did take almost a full bag of feed to get him in the chute the 3rd time though. :lol2:

its a bad year for flies ,, never seen so many in years but i can say that about all the insects around here..

Put 10% clorox solution in a pump up sprayer and spray there eyes bout the cheapest easiest remedy there is other than controlling the flies.
Treated all 3 with Noromyicin 300 and put some eye treatment stuff in their eyes. Found 1 more case and treated. All but the bull show improvement. His might not be as cloudy but noticed a red ring around it. Any suggestions?

Flush it good with penn. Then glue a patch over it, the storebought ones are nice but blue jeans work just as well. If you use the storebought patches, flip them inside out when applying glue and leave a weep hole at the bottom. We've treated 15+ cases already this year, not off to a good start.

A couple years ago we had this problem. I got some "organic 40 iodine" in 1 lb bags and mixed one bag with 50 lb bag of minerals. At that time, we didn't have iodine in our minerals. It cleared up the weepy eyes instantly and we quit having problems with it. Now, anytime we get calf creep we have 1 lb per ton mixed in (using it like the pkg directions say to).

We've also been in the hay and with the cattle currently on our leased land some 20 miles or so away, we've been sort of checking them on the fly - pun intended. Found 4 of 17 calves with pinkeye this morning, all in only one eye. Cows and bull all appeared okay. All had been vaccinated as in the past, but this is the worst we've had it for quite some time.
Found a few more cases today. Been trying to control flies and pastures were clipped several weeks ago. Seems everyone here is having trouble. Local vet has sent some cultures off for testing and they say it is coming back a strain normally found in sheep,

Had to treat our bull last night. He was less than pleased by the process. Didn't do much for me either, since he doesn't fit in the alleyway leading to the chute. I told the maintenance guy (me) it needed to be wider last fall, but he's a slacker. Much snot was blown and much cursing was done.
