Bad morning

Synchronizing 20 head with 7 day gnrh/CIDR/prostaglandin protocol. Had 14 out of 20 head in standing heat last night. Long story short, there was a #$&%$@ bull with them when I got there at 6 am. Not my doing, and he went through two metal gates to get there. Only part that wasn't solid pipe. :frowns:

Plan on running this by our large animal vet, but figured I throw this out here as well to get additional experiences.

1. Some are heifers.
2. The bull isn't considered heifer safe.
3. I've got a bit of scheduling issues for when I'll be available to AI.
4. I pulled cidrs and gave estrumate Friday morning. These 14 had shown heat by Sat evening.


So, I've read that on avg if I gave prostaglandin on day 10-12 post heat, pregnant or non pregnant, the corpus luteum would be destroyed and they'd recycle in 4-7 days.

A. Should I not expect the majority to show heat in a similar time frame of ~36 to 48 hrs as this past weekend after estrumate?

B. Anyone have experience with rebreeding success rates in a situation like this? And if I waited till 15 days pregnant to re-administer prostaglandin so it would fit my window of opportunity, would that be significantly more detrimental?

My initial thoughts are that the corpus luteum last till about 16 days pregnant or not, so it really wouldn't be much different than a normal cycle and that the estrumate would just assure a tighter group and hopefully eliminate any pregnancy from last night.... Or am I wrong?

I think your assumption is correct and is probably the way I would go. I think you could expect at least half a dozen pregnancies by the bull.

Very disappointing to find the bull in but you will work through it, all the best.

Check with your vet, but i'd say that you are spot-on on all three counts.
Administer another dose of Estrumate when it fits your schedule... they should be back in heat in a similar timeframe as this round. Breed-up should be good. The prostaglanding will just assure a tighter group.

You'll have great success with that setup. The only thing I'd change is wait more like 13 days if that will work with your schedule reason being that six head did not show you a heat so you don't know for sure when they ovulated but you do know they're later than the others and you also know that the ones that did will still have a CL.
I would bet that you'll have even better conception this way than you would if you had bred them the first time. I worked with a dairy herd that would sync cows and lut on a set schedule two or three times before we even thought about breeding them and had fantastic results.

Update, incase it helps anyone in the future.... worked out real nice. Estrumate was given on Tuesday morning, all (5) heifers were standing Thursday morning. Four of the cows were standing that night, the rest (11) were standing by the next morning (Friday). It's only 20 head, but that's about as tight of a group as a guy could ask for.

LuckP, if you read this, went ahead and used 10 straws of patent. Figured as much as its gone up, it might not be available much longer.

I'll bet you'll like those Patent calves....have 9 in this spring's crop... every one of them is flat-out good - and not all of them are out of top cows.
