Processing plants closing, more dairies going under, sale barns closed or limiting sales... nah, nothing to see here, sky is the limit!
 
Called my local SB guy this afternoon to see how they are operating. They're selling every week but limiting the number of folks in the ring area. He said prices are up a little over previous weeks.
Last week I penned everything that's not a baby and they go to town tomorrow.

Sure wish someone had a crystal ball, got heck of a set of heifers just born. Kill cows and retain them or sell them along with the steers this fall to pay bills?!

You putting them on grass?
 
I don't think the future is knowable. I think you need to try to estimate the worst case, and whether you can you survive it.

Sometimes winning is just staying in the game.
 
Grassing fall calves. Breeding yearling heifers. Probably should do neither. Thinking if I sell early in fall, green fall yearlings might do ok. Worried about this year's crop of calves and cull cows this fall as I suspect the doorways to get jam packed with guys running for the exits.
 
Grass is good. Not sure that heavy stocking is a wise choice. Seem to be in a window for selling cows to guys with grass fever. I am increasing my hay once and then graze acres.

Yes, probably got enough extra grass to keep 25 till Labor day. Then they will have to go good or bad. I start stockpile fescue then.
 
For many it is how long you can hold out?
- For those with barns full of market ready hogs -- you are looking at weeks. Some "jokes" are going around here about pigs on a diet...
- For those ready to turn out cattle to pasture - - you have months. Problem with that is folks are speculating about a two to three year corona downturn. Its hard for me to think what that would look like.
- Cull market is very weak here. We had three main cow and bull buyers. This week only one had somewhere to take cattle. The weekly auction was a sham with that buyer bidding against the pigeons...

Four weeks ago the cull market was great. Three weeks ago it was down a dime but good. Two weeks ago it was off another 15 cents. That was the week I sold. Last week it was back up 15 cents. Leave it to me to find the bottom of the market.

Da wife asked what she should buy with her stimulus check. I said a cow. She did not find that funny.

I don't think we have seen the meat market bottom yet. I think raising some cash is a good business move. Not sure why some are holding culls.

Hindsight's 20-20. None the less, in a couple months you may be thankful you sold "early". :D

I sold a bunch March 18. As it appears now, I managed to reduce my exposure at an opportune time. Course I was looking down the barrel of above average temperatures and short rainfall, which has somewhat better now.
 
I’m holding the yearlings until the market comes back. It always comes back doesn’t it?
